social media access and mandating age verification on adult sites\">younger social media users<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The gimmick of the app that separates it from its peers like X or is that TikTok is a wholly video-based app. It&rsquo;s possible to lose hours scrolling through an endless stream of minute-long videos.<\/p>\n<p>But while attention deficit concerns are one thing, TikTok drew bipartisan Congressional ire for two reasons completely unrelated to <em>how<\/em> one consumes social media.<\/p>\n<p>First, TikTok has helped proliferate a number of dangerous trends, including, but not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/parents-beware-tiktok-trend-leaves-teen-76-body-burned-unrecognizable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Improvising homemade weapons<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/young-mom-three-others-killed-dangerous-tiktok-trend-surviving-driver-charged-stolen-property\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grand theft auto<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/chicken-side-nyquil-fda-forced-issue-warning-unbelievable-tiktok-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marinating chicken in NyQuil<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/tiktok-influencer-coaches-illegal-immigrants-abuse-legal-loopholes-invade-steal-us-citizens-houses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How to illegally squat in properties<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Secondly, and perhaps even more concerning for lawmakers, is the fact that TikTok&rsquo;s parent company has ties to the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<p>Those concerns &mdash; both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/tiktok-data-suggests-algorithms-align-ccp-objectives-according-alarming-new-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">logistical<\/a> and security-related &mdash; have <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">largely sparked bipartisan support<\/a> for the app to be banned, unless it&rsquo;s divested from ByteDance.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/trump-says-tiktok-sale-deal-come-before-saturday-deadline-2025-03-30\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a>, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle passed a law in 2024 forcing that divestment, with the original deadline being in January.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump has since extended that deadline to April 5, which is this Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Trump was scheduled to hold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-make-final-tiktok-decision-star-meeting-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a meeting<\/a> Wednesday with some heavy hitters in his administration, including Vice President J.D.
