Wouldn’t it reduce more harm if children can’t randomly stumble upon a pipe with fentanyl residue in it at the local playground? But this writer digresses.

Part of this inane “harm reduction” involved a policy in San Francisco that supplied homeless drug users with “clean foil, pipes and plastic straws” that were primarily “used to smoke fentanyl or methamphetamines, and the city spent hundreds of thousands of dollars per year on them.”

(CBS News reported that this practice of distributing drug paraphernalia has been going on since at least 2014.)

Yeesh.

San Francisco’s new “moderate Democrat” mayor, Daniel Lurie, thinks that enough is enough — though if this is a genuine epiphany or a rollback of a deeply unpopular policy remains to be seen.

He told the Times that he would announce on Wednesday a new policy “that walks back the free distribution” of drug paraphernalia.

“We’ve lost our way,” Lurie told the Times. “We are no longer going to sit by and allow people to kill themselves on the streets.”

He added: “This is ideology gone crazy.”

Well, gee, that’s a great sentiment. It genuinely seems like Democrats will defend even the most hardened criminals without hesitation. This trend is particularly evident in California, which has become a prime example of Democratic coastal elitism, with everyday citizens bearing the consequences. A recent illustration of this can be seen in San Francisco, where the streets have become overwhelmed with homelessness and littered with drug paraphernalia. No one—neither parents nor children—wants to encounter used syringes on their walks, yet this is a common sight due to misguided decisions by state leaders. The New York Times notes that for years, San Francisco has adopted a liberal stance towards drug use, prioritizing harm reduction over punishment. However, wouldn’t it be more beneficial if children didn’t come across drug paraphernalia at playgrounds? Part of this flawed approach included providing homeless individuals with clean supplies for using drugs at significant taxpayer expense since at least 2014.

Recently elected moderate Democrat Mayor Daniel Lurie claims it’s time for change and plans to announce new policies that will limit free distribution of such items. He expressed concern over allowing people to harm themselves on the streets and criticized previous ideologies as extreme. While his acknowledgment is welcome, many wonder why it took so long for such realizations to occur.

The shift toward more centrist views among Democrats can be attributed in part to President Trump’s strong election victory and his tough stance on crime compared to those who protect criminals at all costs.
