While Collins aimed to discuss issues pertinent to veterans, Kaitlan pressed him on a controversy known as “Signal-gate,” which involved leaked discussions among management officials regarding military actions. As she continued to focus on this unrelated subject, Collins attempted to redirect the conversation by questioning the network’s alleged hostility towards veterans, citing a recent $5 million defamation case against CNN won by a Navy veteran. The confrontation highlighted the tension between the two, with Collins accusing CNN of avoiding veterans’ issues and Kaitlan insisting on questioning him about the controversy. The clash exemplified a broader trend where officials turn the tables in interviews that seem to veer off-topic, reflecting a strategic approach to media interactions.

In the battle of the unrelated Collinses, Doug seems to have rhetorically razed Kaitlan.

For those of you who missed the battle of the week on Thursday night, Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins appeared on CNN, where he was being interviewed by primetime anchor and chief White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins.

He thought it was supposed to be about veterans. She thought it would be better to spend the time talking about something he didn’t know — namely, “Signal-gate,” the pseudo-scandal which involves the chat where administration officials were discussing a strike on the Houthi rebels in Yemen on the encrypted messaging app with The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg accidentally invited to the chat.

Let’s leave aside the fact that, by the time this took place on Thursday, there really wasn’t any more to the scandal other than whether someone would get fired over that. For those who missed Thursday night’s showdown, Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins was on CNN being interviewed by primetime anchor and chief White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins. He expected the discussion to focus on veterans, while she preferred to delve into a topic he wasn’t familiar with—“Signal-gate,” a minor scandal involving administration officials discussing a strike against Houthi rebels in Yemen via an encrypted messaging app, which inadvertently included The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg. By that point in time, there was little left to the scandal aside from speculation about potential firings (TL;DR: we’ll see). However, it was inappropriate for her to invite a VA official only to discuss something unrelated that he had no knowledge of. Consequently, he decided to flip the script and pose his own off-topic questions. Unsurprisingly, she did not appreciate this turn of events.

A viral clip of their exchange shared by the White House’s Rapid Response 47 account starts with another probing question regarding The Atlantic’s acquisition of messages: “Do you believe it was a mistake to have this conversation that exposed a reporter in an unsupported classified group setting?” Kaitlan asked. Doug replied, “Kaitlan, I’ve just told you I wasn’t part of it and I’m not going to speculate beyond what has already been discussed regarding veterans.” She interrupted him again with more questions about cabinet members using Signal for communication.

Frustrated by her barrage of off-topic inquiries related only tangentially to his role as VA secretary, Doug responded with his own question: “Since you clearly don’t want to talk about veterans issues directly related to my job as VA secretary… why does CNN seem hostile towards veterans? Especially considering your network recently lost a $5 million defamation suit concerning Zachary Young?” This former Navy veteran had won against CNN after they labeled him an “illegal profiteer” for helping evacuate sensitive targets from Afghanistan.

Doug pointed out how one of her colleagues had stated they would “nail him,” asking if that employee still worked there and whether Kaitlan genuinely cared about veterans’ issues. In response, Kaitlan seemed taken aback at being challenged like this but insisted she was conducting an investigation and still had many questions regarding Veterans Affairs.

Doug countered her assertion by stating he’d already answered her previous queries and suggested she should respond instead to his concerns about CNN’s treatment of veterans. Their exchange highlighted how difficult it is for journalists when faced with such direct challenges during interviews—especially when they can’t provide satisfactory answers without damaging their organization’s reputation further.

This incident illustrates how interviews can be commandeered effectively; both Trump and Vance excel at this tactic—and now it’s clear Doug Collins does too.
