His statements followed the case of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Ph.D. student at Tufts University, who had her visa revoked due to her involvement in pro-Palestinian protests. Rubio’s comments highlighted that students are not to engage in political activism, vandalism, or disruption while in the U.S. He referenced a recent initiative that has seen over 300 student visas revoked in response to foreign participants in often-violent protests on U.S. campuses triggered by geopolitical conflicts, particularly after the October 7 attacks against Israel.

Rubio indicated that the government’s stance is firm and that visa revocation serves as a warning to other international students. He stressed that if students use their visas to incite unrest, they would face deportation. The case of Ozturk has prompted discussions about the balance between free expression and maintaining order on university campuses, and Rubio’s comments reflect a broader policy aiming to curb what the government views as harmful activities by foreign nationals in the U.S.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is laying down the law: If you get a student visa to the United States, you’re here to study.

You’re not here to occupy buildings and clash with police.
