Three Democrats voted for his confirmation: Minority Whip Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/dick-durbin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Dick Durbin\">Dick Durbin<\/a> (D-IL), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH). The FDA maintains safety and efficacy standards for drugs, vaccines, foods, and medical devices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Both Bhattacharya and Makary are are outsiders from their respective public health agencies, each of which have been targeted for substantial reforms by Republicans following widespread policy failures and declining trust following the COVID-19 pandemic era.<\/p>\n<p>Each <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">nominee faced long confirmation hearings<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/help-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Senate health\">Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions<\/a>, where they were questioned about their perspectives on key aspects of the MAHA movement and whether or not they agreed with the more controversial positions of Health and Human Services Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/rfk-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Robert F. Kennedy Jr. \">Robert F. He was a lead author of the Great Barrington Declaration, which called for isolating the most vulnerable in society while allowing others to develop immunity to the virus through exposure.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharya was also a strong critic of COVID-19 vaccine mandates, but he vehemently denied during his confirmation hearing that he believes in the connection between vaccines and autism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of Bhattacharya&rsquo;s chief goals for his directorship he outlined during his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/obamas-longest-serving-cabinet-member-confirmed-to-bidens-cabinet\/\" title=\"Obama\u2019s Longest-Serving Cabinet Member ... To Biden\u2019s Cabinet\">confirmation hearing earlier<\/a> this month was to restore trust in the NIH, which many Republicans think was permanently ruptured due to the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If science is a force for freedom and for knowledge, it will have universal support,&rdquo; Bhattacharya said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Makary for FDA<\/h2>\n<p>During his confirmation hearing, Senators from both sides of the aisle pressed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3339631\/trump-fda-nominee-breezes-through-confirmation-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Makary\">Makary<\/a>, a surgeon from Johns Hopkins University, on his ideas for regulating the abortion pill mifepristone, which has become a flashpoint on the debates over abortion and reproductive health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Martin Makary nominated to serve as Commissioner of Food and Drugs at the Department of Health and Human Services, testifies before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Capitol Hill Thursday, March 6, 2025, in Washington. (AP Photo\/Jose Luis Magana)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Makary said repeatedly during his hearing that he had &ldquo;no preconceived plans on mifepristone policy&rdquo; except for reviewing all available safety and efficacy data and to meet with career FDA officials who have been conducting post-market monitoring of the abortifacient.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Josh Hawley almost held up Makary&rsquo;s confirmation following the nominee&rsquo;s support for appointing Hilary Perkins, a career Justice Department attorney, to be FDA chief counsel.
