Dick Durbin claimed in a Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday that in 80 years he has not once heard the term &lsquo;wrongthink,&rsquo; a concept familiar to readers of George Orwell and a phrase increasingly common among conservatives who oppose the government&rsquo;s censorship of free speech.<\/p>\n<p>Durbin&rsquo;s comments were obviously in reference to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/che-guevara-loving-smithsonian-enriched-by-stimulus-bill\/\" title=\"Che Guevara-Loving Smithsonian Enriched by Stimulus Bill\">article written<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/author\/ben-weingarten\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Benjamin Weingarten<\/a> in The Federalist earlier this year. The term &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/wrongthink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrongthink<\/a>&rdquo; now carries a similar meaning.<\/p>\n<p>According to Google, the use of the term &ldquo;wrongthink&rdquo; in writing <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/ngrams\/graph?content=wrongthink&amp;year_start=1900&amp;year_end=2022&amp;corpus=en&amp;smoothing=3&amp;case_insensitive=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spiked<\/a> in the 1980s and has been on the rise again since 2013. The New York Times even employed the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/2021.10.21-120953\/https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1988\/05\/15\/opinion\/out-of-the-memory-hole.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">term<\/a> in 1988 in a piece announcing the publication of  Orwell&rsquo;s <em>1984<\/em> in Russia. The term has also been used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.republicanleader.senate.gov\/newsroom\/remarks\/democrats-threaten-americans-privacy-and-political-speech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">various<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.republicanleader.senate.gov\/newsroom\/remarks\/universities-continue-to-pay-free-speech-double-standard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">times<\/a> on the Senate floor and by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lee.senate.gov\/2021\/2\/sen-lee-sets-senate-republican-antitrust-agenda-for-117th-congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legislators<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/116\/crec\/2019\/10\/16\/CREC-2019-10-16-pt1-PgS5815-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Durbin also asked Weingarten to define the phrase &ldquo;whole-of-society war on wrongthink,&rdquo; also referencing Weingarten&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/29\/trumps-j6-pardons-signal-the-end-of-the-war-on-wrongthink\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> in The Federalist. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;&lsquo;Whole-of-society&rsquo; means government working hand-in-hand with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/400-years-later-i-made-new-discoveries-about-the-first-thanksgiving\/\" title=\"400 Years Later, I Made New Discoveries About The First Thanksgiving\">civil society<\/a> to achieve some sort of outcome,&rdquo; Weingarten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/committee-activity\/hearings\/the-censorship-industrial-complex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. &ldquo;[It&rsquo;s] potentially chilling when you have government and civil society working hand-in-glove because that blurring of the line between civil society and the state can cross into potentially draconian methods and outcomes.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Federalist&rsquo;s Editor-in-Chief Mollie Hemingway also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FDRLST\/status\/1904607937353425399\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testified<\/a> before the committee, outlining the ways the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-trump-derangement-gave-birth-to-the-censorship-industrial-complex\/\" title=\"How Trump Derangement Gave Birth To The\u00a0...-Industrial\u00a0Complex\">censorship-industrial complex<\/a> has been targeting conservatives and free speech.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;[T]he right to free speech has been under worse attack in the last decade than at any other point in our nation&rsquo;s history,&rdquo; Hemingway said in her opening statement.&ldquo;Attacking free speech and debate has become a massive industry, much of it government-funded, and all of it threatening a free society.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Logan Washburn is a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">staff writer covering election integrity<\/a>.
