While very few are defending what happened, we are all living with the trail of broken promises and the broader and enduring health setbacks. This failure is most evident in the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">misguided mass vaccination strategy pursued<\/a> by the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. can seize this opportunity to regain public trust by harnessing the potential of repurposed generic drugs that have been sitting on the sidelines for too long.<\/p>\n<p>Early in the pandemic, top research institutions&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/17\/science\/coronavirus-treatment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">urgently collaborated<\/a>&nbsp;to study potential treatments. Physicians around the world published&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/c19early.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a>&nbsp;showing repurposed drugs like hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin treated Covid symptoms and had demonstrable clinical benefit. But the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other scientific bodies&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/nih-halts-clinical-trial-hydroxychloroquine#:~:text=A%20clinical%20trial%20to%20evaluate,the%20National%20Institutes%20of%20Health.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">halted<\/a>&nbsp;trials on the basis of safety concerns that were clearly driven by politics &mdash; not science. Proponents of repurposed drugs were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/youtube-cancels-the-u-s-senate-11612288061\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shunned<\/a>, and resources that were committed to studying them were used to push vaccines with no long-term efficacy or safety.<\/p>\n<p>Biden and his top health officials made numerous&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/kevinnbass\/status\/1892714364584484982\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">false<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/liz_churchill10\/status\/1897662416223129835\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claims<\/a>&nbsp;about the protection vaccinated people could expect against Covid and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-federal-court-freezes-biden-vaccine-mandate-over-possible-grave-statutory-and-constitutional-issues?%3Futm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=dwtwitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">illegally attempted to force employers to require vaccines<\/a>. As a result, after five years. trust in public health has never been lower, and we haven&rsquo;t learned much about the potential of repurposed drugs to treat Covid. The disease killed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/post\/covid-19-impact-5-years-later-symptoms-guidelines-how-virus-changed-lives\/15984093\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about 2,700 people in the past month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Repurposed drugs alone or in combination can combat an array of chronic diseases, but only if the Trump administration reverses the policies of its predecessor and creates a structured, interdisciplinary study of repurposed generic drugs. Working hand in hand, government agencies, together with independent, practicing physicians, scientists, clinicians, and other health experts, can build a transparent and accountable system to study and discover cost-effective new ways to improve health.<\/p>\n<p>About&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/coronavirus-covid-19\/issue-brief\/as-recommendations-for-isolation-end-how-common-is-long-covid\/#:~:text=At%20any%20point%20in%20time,COVID%20from%20other%20data%20sources.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">17 million adults<\/a>&nbsp;have Long Covid, which is defined as symptoms that last for three months. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covid\/long-term-effects\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDC website<\/a>&nbsp;correctly labels Long Covid a &ldquo;serious public health concern.&rdquo; Yet, in the same breath, they also refer to the Covid vaccine as the &ldquo;best available tool.&rdquo;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41591-022-01840-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">On that point, the government could not be more wrong<\/a>. In fact,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/healthcare\/4512451-is-it-long-covid-or-long-vax-does-the-government-want-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Long Covid more often starts after vaccination than it does the illness.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Over the past three years, my practice has evaluated and treated more than 1,500 patients suffering Long Covid symptoms. Most reported their symptoms starting not after a Covid infection, but after vaccination. Two generic drugs that we have found that improve symptoms are ivermectin &mdash; a Nobel-prize winning wonder treatment that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/03\/27\/health\/fda-ivermectin-lawsuit\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FDA mocked during the pandemic<\/a> &mdash; and low-dose naltrexone.<\/p>\n<p>Other treatments show promise and merit further study. Elon Musk&rsquo;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/03\/18\/tech\/elon-musk-ketamine-use-don-lemon-interview\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">critics<\/a>&nbsp;weaponize his use of ketamine to discredit his decision-making, but at low doses the drug&rsquo;s ability to regrow nerves and synapses, remyelinate nerves, and inhibit neuroinflammation has led to growing use in psychiatry to more effectively treat anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. Through my network of practicing clinicians, I have learned that many experienced psychiatrists using low-dose ketamine have also observed improvements in co-morbid neurological conditions such as peripheral neuropathy, dementia, and ALS. A Mount Sinai study found it could even&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/about\/newsroom\/2022\/new-study-suggests-ketamine-may-be-an-effective-treatment-for-children-with-adnp-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">help treat a rare form of autism in children<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Then there is dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) &mdash; an FDA-approved treatment for bladder pain syndrome.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/faseb.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1096\/fasebj.2020.34.s1.03158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dozens<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1808213\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in-vitro<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-1-4757-1235-3_24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studies<\/a>&nbsp;show DMSO&rsquo;s potential for treating cancer in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/synapse.koreamed.org\/articles\/1036489\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">humans<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/000887499090134D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">animals<\/a>. Several clinical trials found that long-term administration of DMSO significantly increased survival in&nbsp;colon cancer&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1591948\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gastric cancer<\/a>, and even&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nyaspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1749-6632.1967.tb34919.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">led to remission<\/a>&nbsp;in some patients. In 2022, President Biden re-launched his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bidenwhitehouse.archives.gov\/ostp\/news-updates\/2025\/01\/15\/the-biden-cancer-moonshot-ending-cancer-as-we-know-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cancer Moonshot<\/a>&nbsp;with the laudable goal of cutting the cancer death rate by at least half by 2047, but he missed an opportunity to study new applications for old drugs.<\/p>\n<p>My organization, Rebuild Medicine, is sponsoring an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rebuildmedicine.com\/our-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ongoing observational study<\/a>&nbsp;tracking how patients respond to various adjunct cancer therapies using repurposed drugs and nutritional intervention. These clinics will collaborate and share anonymous patient information in a centralized collection tool, where the data will be tracked and analyzed to determine improvements in the five-year survival rate for breast, prostate, lung, colorectal, and many other types of cancer. The insights from this study will inform public and clinical understanding of the potential for available and affordable medicines to improve overall health.<\/p>\n<p>A key takeaway from the Covid era is that government officials may never fully earn the public&rsquo;s trust back, but the Trump administration can certainly try. We should get back to real &ldquo;science,&rdquo; &mdash; not the Democrat&rsquo;s politicized &ldquo;follow the science&rdquo; messaging &mdash; but a new regulatory framework for the systematic, transparent study of repurposed generic drugs. This effort can complement FDA review, guide clinical practice, and devise new methods for reimbursement to assure Americans benefit.
