According to court documents from the Justice department, Khalil allegedly failed to disclose his employment with UNRWA, his membership in a pro-Palestinian student group, and his previous work at the British embassy\u2019s syria office. The government asserts that Khalil sought immigration benefits through fraudulent misrepresentation, emphasizing that such misrepresentations are not protected under free speech laws.<\/p>\n<p>Khalil, who claims his detainment and deportation efforts are politically motivated, argues that his actions fall under the realm of protected speech. In January, three Israelis taken hostage by Hamas during the attack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/3296375\/freed-israeli-hostages-held-united-nations-camps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">said they were held captive<\/a> in a UNRWA camp in Gaza.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Khalil was a political officer of UNRWA in 2023, according to the government&rsquo;s lawsuit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Protesters rally in support of detained pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, Friday, March 14, 2025, in New York. The Trump administration detained Khalil for deportation earlier this month, accusing him of &ldquo;siding with [Hamas] terrorists&rdquo; and &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/3343149\/judge-trump-administration-deport-pro-palestinian-columbia-protester-mahmoud-khalil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">[leading]  activities aligned to Hamas<\/a>.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3345064\/trump-administration-duel-mahmoud-khalil-lawyers-over-where-case-should-be-heard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">TRUMP ADMINISTRATION SET TO DUEL WITH MAHMOUD KHALIL&rsquo;S LAWYERS OVER WHERE CASE SHOULD BE HEARD<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The administration&rsquo;s move came after Khalil <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3345064\/trump-administration-duel-mahmoud-khalil-lawyers-over-where-case-should-be-heard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">was accused of being involved in a Columbia University pro-Palestinian demonstration <\/a>where pamphlets written by Hamas state media were distributed, as well as an incident where masked protesters disrupted a classroom to hand out anti-Zionist material. Two students were expelled over that matter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, the case to remove him from the country is playing out in the legal system after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/3343149\/judge-trump-administration-deport-pro-palestinian-columbia-protester-mahmoud-khalil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">a federal judge blocked <\/a>the government from immediately deporting Khalil.
