(As an enforcer of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bidens-education-department-announces-investigation-accusing-states-ban-mask-wearing-schools-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">left-wing priorities<\/a> during Democratic administrations, it&rsquo;s got a much more efficient record.)<\/p>\n<p>No executive order from Trump can completely abolish the department. As a creation of Congress, it will take a congressional vote to close it completely.<\/p>\n<p>But Thursday&rsquo;s order is a great first step &mdash; a death sentence, as it were, even if the actual execution is a long way off.<\/p>\n<p>Trump campaigned on ending the department. The reality of decades of failure is too plain to see.<\/p>\n<p>Way back in 1983, the department commissioned a study of the U.S. educational system by a National Commission on Excellence in Education.<\/p>\n<p>The commission&rsquo;s report was titled &mdash; appropriately, and disturbingly enough &mdash; &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/e4e.org\/sites\/default\/files\/a_nation_at_risk_1983.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Nation at Risk<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>After an introduction, its first page included these sentences:<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If an unfriendly foreign power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might well have viewed it as an act of war. As it stands, we have allowed this to happen to ourselves.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Those words are as true in 2025 as they were four decades ago. And as Leavitt&rsquo;s statistics showed, precious little has changed in the intervening years. (And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/kathy-hochul-finally-agrees-conservatives-closing-schools-covid-2-years-late\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID can&rsquo;t be blamed<\/a>.
