ActBlue stands accused by Republicans of illegally collecting money for Democrats during the 2024 election by using deceptive methods. But its brushes with controversy go back further than the last cycle, and its next chapter could be consequential for a Democratic Party that is out of power and directionless. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/3348194\/allegations-facing-actblue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Part 1\">Part 1<\/a> of this&nbsp;<\/em>Washington Examiner<em>&nbsp;series examined what accusations ActBlue faces. For every dollar these organizations raise through ActBlue, the payment processor <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.actblue.com\/pricing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">pockets <\/a>roughly 4 cents &mdash; a seemingly small quantity that quickly adds up, given the platform&rsquo;s billions of dollars in contributions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, the left-of-center payment processing giant is facing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/3342984\/what-is-going-on-with-actblue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">mysterious exodus<\/a> of top staffers, and rumors swirl about possible Republican investigations into alleged fraud and other alleged misconduct.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While it is unclear what, if any, legal repercussions could be in store for ActBlue, <a href=\"https:\/\/issa.house.gov\/media\/in-the-news\/icymi-issa-calls-investigation-actblue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">high-level Republicans<\/a> have <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/12\/04\/top-republican-calls-for-dems-actblue-to-stop-processing-donations-for-hamas-sympathizers-following-dcnf-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">criticized<\/a> the payment processor for its support of groups engaged in contentious protests. Elon Musk has sung a similar tune, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1898369343399899218\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">accusing <\/a>ActBlue of processing payments for the groups behind the recent string of vandalism at Tesla dealerships nationwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The five groups named by Musk <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">&mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/event_campaigns\/teslatakedown\" target=\"_blank\">Troublemakers<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/event_campaigns\/teslatakedown\" target=\"_blank\">Disruption Project<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/12\/us-news\/radical-anti-elon-musk-group-received-7-6m-from-george-soros\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rise &amp; Resist<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indivisible.org\/muskorus\" target=\"_blank\">Indivisible Project<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/socialists.nyc\/stop-musk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Socialists of America<\/a> &mdash; indeed use ActBlue to fundraise and have been promoting anti-Musk demonstrations, at which<\/span> activists have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/story\/tesla-dealership-attacks-elon-musk-protests-escalate?srsltid=AfmBOoqHeu8HEiOQPmPybXQwiG9Je84veyhlKCEIcQDqwIPfoGdhX1NK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">arrested <\/a>on charges ranging from disorderly conduct to vandalism.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Elon Musk arrives before the 60th presidential inauguration, Monday, Jan. 20, 2025, in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington. (Chip Somodevilla\/Pool Photo via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>ActBlue&rsquo;s link to the left-wing protesters is nothing new, but much of it has gone unreported.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, the platform has processed money for bail funds that ultimately freed violent criminals, processed donations for racial activist groups participating in riots, and provided the financial infrastructure to keep pro-Palestinian protests, including pro-Hamas demonstrations and campus occupations, running.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2020, riots over the death of George Floyd began to wash over the country. Demonstrators swept through cities with waves of destruction, with one analysis finding that the outbursts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2020\/09\/16\/riots-cost-property-damage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">cost <\/a>insurance companies between $1 billion and $2 billion, a figure that doesn&rsquo;t include costs borne directly by property owners, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/lake-street-fights-on-minneapolis-george-floyd-riot\/600174854\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">60%<\/a> of the damage that was uninsured in Minneapolis. Authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2020\/06\/22\/who-caused-violence-protests-its-not-antifa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">arrested <\/a>well over 14,000 people for offenses such as looting, obstructing roadways, and assault. Nineteen people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jemimamcevoy\/2020\/06\/08\/14-days-of-protests-19-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">died <\/a>as a result of the movement.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Organizations fundraising through ActBlue promoted the nationwide chaos by organizing demonstrations and, in some cases, encouraging violence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;So proud of all the Minnesotans fighting back against the police tonight,&rdquo; a May 28, 2020, tweet from the Twin Cities DSA <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TwinCitiesDSA\/status\/1266197798183198720\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">reads<\/a>. &ldquo;Minneapolis St. Paul claiming our cities from the oppressors who would rather watch the city burn than see George Floyd&rsquo;s murderers brought to justice.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>ActBlue <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.actblue.com\/donate\/twincitiesdsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">maintains <\/a>an active donation page for the Twin Cities DSA.<\/p>\n<p>Over 2,000 police officers were injured during the opening weeks of the Floyd riots, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/police-chief-officers-injured-riots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according <\/a>to a Major Cities Chiefs Association report.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This wasn&rsquo;t an isolated case in the DSA, as the national chapter <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">swif<\/span>tly&nbsp;endorsed&nbsp;the emerging violent protests and called on its members to take to the streets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We stand with and share the rage of all those who are making themselves heard on the streets after years of being suffocated by policing and poverty, after years of being looted by corporations, landlords, and billionaires,&rdquo; the national DSA said in a May 28, 2020, statement. &ldquo;We will fight for a world where Black people can breathe freely and challenge ourselves to take greater responsibility for abolition, and the courage to pursue a just and liberated future.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The DSA listed two partner groups, <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.actblue.com\/donate\/black-visions-collective-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Black Visions Collective<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.actblue.com\/donate\/centro-de-trabajadores-unidos-en-la-lucha--ctul--1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Centro De Trabajadores Unidos En La Lucha<\/a>, as &ldquo;on the ground&rdquo; participating in the riots and encouraged people to donate to them. Both groups have active ActBlue fundraising pages.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve protested,&rdquo; one CTUL organizer <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/08\/19\/walzs-administration-paid-pro-defund-police-group-promote-labor-policies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">said <\/a>in 2020. &ldquo;We fought for the police not to get higher pay, but we were ignored, and they are still killing. Now, it is to the point where everybody is so angry &mdash; I don&rsquo;t think half of these stores would have been burned or touched if we weren&rsquo;t so fed up.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to participating in the Minneapolis riots, the group distributed food, water, and masks to demonstrators.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A protester runs past burning cars and buildings on Chicago Avenue, Saturday, May 30, 2020, in St. Paul, Minnesota. (AP Photo\/John Minchillo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Perhaps the most important nonprofit organization of the Floyd movement was the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation. The BLM group, which has an ActBlue <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.actblue.com\/donate\/black-lives-matter--blm--1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">donation portal<\/a>, raised over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/02\/25\/us\/black-lives-matter-2020-donation-report-trnd\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">$90 million<\/a> in 2020 and was a <a href=\"https:\/\/participedia.net\/organization\/black-lives-matter-global-network#:~:text=Major%20Projects%20and%20Events,in%20the%20George%20Floyd%20protests.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">central hub<\/a> for protest organization efforts. Additionally, the organization routed tens of millions of dollars to local activist groups that staged racial justice protests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The fundraising platform cashed in from the chaos by breaking its all-time fundraising record at the height of the protests in June 2020, pulling in $392 million, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/07\/01\/actblue-june-protests-coronavirus-347492\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according <\/a>to <em>Politico<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>ActBlue&rsquo;s involvement with the Floyd riots extends beyond fundraising for its foot soldiers. It also provided the financial infrastructure for the bail funds that paid to release protesters suspected of criminal wrongdoing after police had arrested them.<\/p>\n<p>A <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>review of ActBlue&rsquo;s public fundraising directory shows that the payment processor handles donations for dozens of bail funds, including some that later released people who went on to commit violent crimes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of individuals freed by bail funds went on to be arrested under suspicion of assault, kidnapping, murder, and attempted murder, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/21\/us\/bail-reform-bail-charities-invs\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according <\/a>to a CNN investigation. Of the nine murder cases identified by CNN, eight were bailed out by charities that fundraise through ActBlue. Two were released through <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.actblue.com\/donate\/the-bail-project-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">The Bail Project<\/a>, four through the <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.actblue.com\/donate\/northwest-community-bail-fund-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Northwest Community Bail Fund<\/a>, and two through the <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.actblue.com\/donate\/minnesota-freedom-fund-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Minnesota Freedom Fund<\/a>, which former Vice President Kamala Harris famously promoted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In one case, The Bail Project freed 33-year-old Marcus Garvin after he was charged with stabbing a gas station customer in the back because he was taking too long in the bathroom. Six months later, authorities charged Garvin with murder after he confessed to police that he murdered his girlfriend by stabbing her in the neck and attempting to sever her leg to dispose of the body, which he later did by dumping it in the woods.<\/p>\n<p>The same CNN investigation found that at least 65 defendants bailed out by the Minnesota Freedom Fund around the time of the Floyd riots were later convicted on felony charges involving violence, physical threats, or sex crimes. More recently, a man <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/12\/07\/mass-murder-suspect-bond-soros\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">bailed out<\/a> by the ActBlue-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.actblue.com\/donate\/texas-organizing-project-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Texas Organizing Project<\/a> after police charged him with assaulting his parents allegedly went on a statewide shooting spree in Texas, killing six and injuring three.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When mass nationwide protests returned to the United States after Hamas&rsquo;s Oct. 7 terrorist attacks in Israel, ActBlue was standing by to provide support to pro-Palestinian demonstrators, including groups engaging in legally dubious tactics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In November 2023, the Arab Resource and Organizing Center collaborated with Samidoun Seattle, a U.S. arm of an Israeli-designated terrorist organization, to blockade a port on Puget Sound, purportedly to stop aid shipments from reaching Israel. Protesters occupied public roads to block land access to the port and used small boats to obscure sea access. The Arab Resource and Organizing Center <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.actblue.com\/donate\/aroc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">fundraises <\/a>through ActBlue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jewish Voice for Peace, which also raises money through ActBlue, later partnered with the same Samidoun branch to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2024\/01\/08\/activists-palestinian-highway-blockade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">block <\/a>the I-5 highway in Seattle, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/washington\/article_60d02f42-b189-11ee-a8bb-e38804948e7b.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">illegal <\/a>in Washington state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Signs are displayed outside a tent encampment at Northwestern University on Friday, April 26, 2024, in Evanston, Illinois. (AP Photo\/Teresa Crawford, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/secure.actblue.com\/donate\/jewish-voice-for-peace-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Jewish Voice for Peace<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.actblue.com\/donate\/ifnotnow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">IfNotNow<\/a>, and the DSA were three of the primary groups behind the campus protests that saw police arrest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/2000-people-arrested-nationwide-palestinian-campus-protests-rcna150446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">over 2,000 people<\/a> on a variety of charges following clashes with police, building occupations, and protracted periods of illegal camping on university quadrangles.
