Eric Schmitt of Missouri.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&ldquo;This vast censorship enterprise represents an existential threat to the American way of life,&rdquo; Schmitt said in a statement to The Federalist. &ldquo;Over the past decade, we&rsquo;ve watched as a global system of government bureaucrats, shadowy NGOs, Big Tech companies, and far-left activist groups have worked hand-in-glove to censor Americans.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The federal government&rsquo;s anti-speech activities have been obvious for years &mdash; from <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/hunter-biden-laptop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">censorship<\/a> of the Hunter Biden laptop story to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/13\/zuckerbergs-rebrand-of-facebooks-role-in-biden-censorship-scheme-refuted-in-facebook-files\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">silencing<\/a> concerns about the Covid-19 vaccine to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/11\/07\/government-censorship-op-targeted-the-federalists-mollie-hemingway-sean-davis-during-2020-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">targeting<\/a> conservative media like The Federalist. But today, Schmitt published a thread on X illustrating how components of this vast censorship-industrial complex have been colluding to control public discourse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&ldquo;The censorship-industrial complex wasn&rsquo;t built overnight. It&rsquo;s been festering for years,&rdquo; Schmitt posted to X. &ldquo;But the Biden administration mobilized an unholy alliance of government power, taxpayer dollars, NGOs and Big Tech companies to build it into a global censorship powerhouse.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>The Left spent the past decade building a vast censorship enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>A shadowy network of NGOs, tech groups and governments working to censor the Left&#8217;s enemies&mdash;not just in America, but across the West.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next four years, the GOP must expose + dismantle this system. &#129525; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XH2EkdGaoM\">pic.twitter.com\/XH2EkdGaoM<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&mdash; Eric Schmitt (@Eric_Schmitt) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Eric_Schmitt\/status\/1899826920419664131?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 12, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Seemingly <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Eric_Schmitt\/status\/1899826933128458588\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">every agency<\/a>&rdquo; participated in the censorship-industrial complex, Schmitt posted, including the CIA, DHS, FBI and NSA &mdash; and even USAID, FEMA, and the National Science Foundation. They operated as &ldquo;one cohesive class,&rdquo; with a &ldquo;revolving door between the &lsquo;public&rsquo; and &lsquo;private&rsquo; spheres.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>While serving as Missouri attorney general in 2022, Schmitt filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/23\/exclusive-schmitt-probes-federal-censors-efforts-to-trample-americans-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> &mdash; <em>Murthy v. Missouri<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/court-cases\/murthy-v-missouri-formerly-missouri-v-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">originally<\/a> <em>Missouri v. Biden<\/em> &mdash; alongside Louisiana&rsquo;s now-Gov. Jeff Landry alleging former President Joe Biden&rsquo;s administration collaborated with Big Tech companies to censor Americans&rsquo; speech online, violating the First Amendment. The Supreme Court returned the case to a lower court last fall, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/26\/scotus-green-lights-feds-big-tech-censorship-scheme-ahead-of-2024-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enabling<\/a> Big Tech to continue colluding with government to censor speech online. A judge has since <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/02\/12\/judges-pause-of-murthy-v-missouri-threatens-effort-to-dismantle-government-censorship-complex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paused<\/a> the litigation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As Missouri Attorney General, I was proud to stand up for the American people by filing <em>Missouri v. Biden<\/em> to combat this vast censorship enterprise,&rdquo; Schmitt told The Federalist. &ldquo;That case helped expose how intimately involved the Biden administration was in the campaign to subvert Americans&rsquo; First Amendment rights online.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Schmitt told The Federalist he looks forward to &ldquo;working with my colleagues in the Senate&rdquo; and with President Donald Trump&rsquo;s administration to &ldquo;continue to bring this issue to light and finally put a stop to it.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Government Collusion<\/h2>\n<p>The government agencies Schmitt listed have recent histories fraught with censorship efforts. The State Department used its <a href=\"https:\/\/crsreports.congress.gov\/product\/pdf\/IN\/IN12475#:~:text=The%20legislative%20authority%20for%20the,terminated%20on%20December%2023%2C%202024.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">now-defunct<\/a> Global Engagement Center to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/19\/meet-the-shadowy-group-that-ran-the-federal-governments-censorship-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">push<\/a> Big Tech companies to join &ldquo;Disinfo Cloud&rdquo; &mdash; a repository of censorship &ldquo;tools and technologies&rdquo; administered by a private firm. The State Department and GEC &mdash; along with the Defense Department&rsquo;s U.S. Cyber Command &mdash;&nbsp; also approved <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/25\/us-news\/pentagon-other-agencies-funded-censorship-firm-that-blacklisted-the-post-house-committee-reveals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contracts<\/a> with NewsGuard, which helps censor and suppress <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/03\/04\/after-disavowing-newsguard-microsoft-still-promotes-the-censorship-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unapproved speech<\/a> deemed &ldquo;disinformation&rdquo; by rating media outlets. According to Schmitt, its advisory board <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Eric_Schmitt\/status\/1899827034408300815\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">included<\/a> &ldquo;former heads of the CIA and NSA, DHS, and the GEC.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The GEC also <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/09\/house-republicans-state-department-hiding-its-funding-for-censorship-industrial-complex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funded<\/a> the Global Disinformation Index, a London-based group that downranks and deplatforms outlets guilty of speech it deems &ldquo;disinformation.&rdquo; According to UnHerd, GDI <a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/2024\/04\/inside-the-disinformation-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ranked<\/a> leftist outlets like the HuffPost, Buzzfeed News, and The Washington Post among the &ldquo;least dangerous,&rdquo; and conservative outlets like The Federalist, The Daily Wire, and the New York Post among the &ldquo;most dangerous,&rdquo; prompting The Federalist, The Daily Wire, and the State of Texas <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/12\/06\/state-of-texas-joins-the-federalist-daily-wire-in-suing-the-federal-censorship-industrial-complex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to sue<\/a> the State Department for First Amendment violations. Schmitt helped lead the charge to shut down the GEC.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>The GEC was created to combat FOREIGN propaganda aimed at undermining US security.<\/p>\n<p>But instead, it was turned inwards on our own citizens.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve seen this stuff happen across our intelligence and security agencies.<\/p>\n<p>I fought to shutter the GEC&mdash;for good.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Zfmi7fDlIU\">https:\/\/t.co\/Zfmi7fDlIU<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&mdash; Eric Schmitt (@Eric_Schmitt) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Eric_Schmitt\/status\/1899826994285511036?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 12, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>FEMA awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/foundationforfreedomonline.com\/dhs-fema-million-misinformation-ccdh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$2.6 million<\/a> contract in 2023 to the private firm Guidehouse to &ldquo;analyze &lsquo;misinformation and disinformation,&rsquo;&rdquo; according to the Foundation for Freedom Online, which found Guidehouse &ldquo;engages&rdquo; social media platforms for clients &ldquo;to report &lsquo;mis- and disinformation.&rsquo;&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>FEMA falls under the Department of Homeland Security, which incubated the &ldquo;Election Integrity Partnership &mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-judiciary.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/EIP_Jira-Ticket-Staff-Report-11-7-23-Clean.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">formed<\/a> &ldquo;at the request&rdquo; of CISA, the federal government&rsquo;s online <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/05\/why-cisas-censorship-and-election-interference-work-is-the-most-insidious-attack-on-american-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">censorship hub<\/a>, in 2020. The EIP, under the Stanford Internet Observatory, worked &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-judiciary.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/EIP_Jira-Ticket-Staff-Report-11-7-23-Clean.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">directly<\/a>&rdquo; with DHS and the GEC to &ldquo;monitor and censor Americans&rsquo; online speech in advance of the 2020 presidential election.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>CISA also formed a &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Eric_Schmitt\/status\/1899827003701768557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">counter-disinformation<\/a>&rdquo; coalition ahead of the 2020 election. Around the same time, the subagency <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/23\/cisa-censors-join-forces-with-private-groups-to-target-so-called-election-misinformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worked with<\/a> &ldquo;Zuckbucks&rdquo; groups and <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/media\/in-the-news\/jordan-tells-cisa-fork-over-docs-about-its-collusion-pennsylvania-target-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">targeted<\/a> election speech it deemed &ldquo;mis-, dis-, and malinformation.&rdquo; CISA was initially <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-judiciary.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/cisa-staff-report6-26-23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">focused<\/a> on countering &ldquo;foreign&rdquo; cybersecurity threats, but according to a U.S. House report, it was turned on the American people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As Schmitt noted, the National Science Foundation gave <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Eric_Schmitt\/status\/1899826933128458588\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$5.7 million<\/a> to Meedan, &ldquo;a nonprofit building surveillance tools to monitor private WhatsApp messages.&rdquo; As The Federalist previously reported, Meedan is a &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/03\/04\/conservative-legal-group-launches-project-to-expose-censorship-industrial-complex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">partner<\/a>&rdquo; with the University of Michigan&rsquo;s online censorship tool &ldquo;WiseDex&rdquo; &mdash; which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisedex.info\/#About-Us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enables<\/a> &ldquo;fast, comprehensive misinformation enforcement.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>NSF also gave <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Eric_Schmitt\/status\/1899826933128458588\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$5.75 million<\/a> to Course Correct, which is artificial intelligence technology <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/03\/04\/conservative-legal-group-launches-project-to-expose-censorship-industrial-complex\/\">created<\/a> by the University of Wisconsin for &ldquo;tracking and censoring &lsquo;misinformation.&rsquo;&rdquo; Additionally, NSF gave <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Eric_Schmitt\/status\/1899826933128458588\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$2.25 million<\/a> to the University of Washington&rsquo;s Center for an Informed Public for &ldquo;mitigating online disinformation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>&lsquo;Nongovernmental&rsquo; Speech Police<\/h2>\n<p>Schmitt called out the &ldquo;revolving door&rdquo; between the government and so-called &ldquo;nongovernmental&rdquo; groups that enforce regime censorship. &ldquo;Former government officials <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Eric_Schmitt\/status\/1899826936852943040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">populate<\/a> the advisory boards of these &lsquo;disinformation&rsquo; groups &mdash; and vice versa,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The numerous attempts to censor content on X provide compelling evidence for Schmitt&rsquo;s &ldquo;revolving door&rdquo; contention. After Elon Musk bought Twitter and renamed it X, he <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/11\/10\/grading-elon-musks-first-year-at-twitter-4-major-wins-but-much-room-for-improvement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drastically changed<\/a> the platform&rsquo;s policy to embrace free speech. This soon drew the ire of left-wing groups. The Anti-Defamation League, the Center for Countering Digital Hate, and Institute for Strategic Dialogue &mdash; which have close ties to government actors &mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/shellenberger\/status\/1699120024378827200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demanded<\/a> more censorship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After the ADL <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/resources\/press-release\/adl-statement-xtwitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alleged<\/a> X was enabling antisemitic speech, Musk said the platform&rsquo;s ad revenue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/09\/05\/tech\/elon-musk-adl-lawsuit\/index.html#:~:text=In%20a%20post%20on%20X,in%20killing%20X%2FTwitter!%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plunged 60 percent<\/a> due to pressure from the group. ADL currently &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/adl-and-law-enforcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">works closely<\/a> with federal, state, and local law enforcement&rdquo; to whom it offers &ldquo;information and intelligence&rdquo; and &ldquo;informational briefings&rdquo; on groups it deems extremist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the Institute for Strategic Dialogue alleged &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.isdglobal.org\/isd-publications\/antisemitism-on-twitter-before-and-after-elon-musks-acquisition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a major and sustained spike<\/a> in antisemitic posts&rdquo; on X since Musk&rsquo;s purchase. The ISD is a London group criticized for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/organization\/institute-for-strategic-dialogue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">censoring<\/a> conservative opinions online by labeling them &ldquo;misinformation,&rdquo; according to InfluenceWatch. As The Federalist previously reported, the State Department <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/19\/meet-the-shadowy-group-that-ran-the-federal-governments-censorship-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funded<\/a> ISD&rsquo;s research through Disinfo Cloud.<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/center-for-countering-digital-hate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">London<\/a> group, the Center for Countering Digital Hate, allegedly said in internal documents one of its strategic priorities was to &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/10\/23\/foreign-censorship-outfit-that-advises-kamala-harris-aims-to-kill-musks-twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kill Musk&rsquo;s Twitter<\/a>.&rdquo; According to InfluenceWatch, the group targets what it deems &ldquo;hate groups&rdquo; with &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/center-for-countering-digital-hate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">de-platforming campaigns<\/a>.&rdquo; CCDH <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/07\/20\/white-houses-relies-on-foreign-dark-money-group-that-tried-to-deplatform-the-federalist-to-justify-censorship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">colluded<\/a> with NBC News in 2020 to target The Federalist, attempting to strip its Google ad revenue.<\/p>\n<p>This all goes to show that the censorship-industrial complex is rife with public-private collusion to stifle Americans&rsquo; speech.
