When the state passed a law forcing mental health professionals to advance radical gender ideology, she challenged it. Now, the Supreme Court has agreed to review the case &mdash; in what could bring a landmark ruling for free speech.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The government has no business censoring private conversations between clients and counselors, nor should a counselor be used as a tool to impose the government&rsquo;s biased views on her clients,&rdquo; said Kristen Waggoner, CEO of Alliance Defending Freedom &mdash; which is representing Chiles &mdash; in a news <a href=\"https:\/\/adflegal.org\/press-release\/supreme-court-to-decide-can-colorado-silence-counselors-who-dont-push-gender-ideology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1988581709\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Chiles <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/5185610-supreme-court-colorado-conversion-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">challenged<\/a> Colorado&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2019a_1129_signed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">law<\/a> banning so-called &ldquo;conversion therapy&rdquo; in 2022, according to The Hill, saying it hindered her efforts to assist those with &ldquo;same-sex attractions or gender identity confusion&rdquo; who &ldquo;prioritize their faith above their feelings.&rdquo; She &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/2025\/03\/supreme-court-takes-up-challenge-to-colorado-ban-on-conversion-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">never promises<\/a> that she can solve&rdquo; these issues but works to help clients &ldquo;accept the bodies that God has given them and find peace.&rdquo; Chiles sought an injunction, citing the law&rsquo;s violation of her First Amendment rights&nbsp;to freedom of speech and freedom of religion.<\/p>\n<p>The 10th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ca10.uscourts.gov\/sites\/ca10\/files\/opinions\/010111111013.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruled against<\/a> Chiles, but in November, her attorneys petitioned the Supreme Court to consider the case, according to SCOTUSblog.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ADF <a href=\"https:\/\/adflegal.org\/press-release\/supreme-court-to-decide-can-colorado-silence-counselors-who-dont-push-gender-ideology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> the Colorado law violates Chiles&rsquo; freedom of speech by banning counselors from &ldquo;having any conversation with clients under age 18 that &lsquo;attempts or purports to change an individual&rsquo;s sexual orientation or gender identity.&rsquo;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Significantly, the law only prohibits counseling conversations in one direction,&rdquo; reads the ADF release. &ldquo;For example, it allows counseling conversations that aim to steer young people <em>toward<\/em> a gender identity different than their sex but prohibits conversations that aim to help them return to comfort with their sex when they desire that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Under this <a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2019a_1129_signed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">law<\/a>, &ldquo;conversion therapy&rdquo; includes &ldquo;efforts to change behaviors or gender expressions or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attraction or feelings toward individuals of the same sex.&rdquo; But it &ldquo;does not include practices or treatments&rdquo; that assist with things like &ldquo;identity exploration and development&rdquo; and &ldquo;assistance to a person undergoing gender transition.&rdquo;&rsquo; According to the ADF <a href=\"https:\/\/adflegal.org\/press-release\/supreme-court-to-decide-can-colorado-silence-counselors-who-dont-push-gender-ideology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">release<\/a>, the law constitutes &ldquo;one-sided censorship.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Colorado&rsquo;s law prohibits what&rsquo;s best for these children and sends a clear message: the only option for children struggling with these issues is to give them dangerous and experimental drugs and surgery that will make them lifelong patients,&rdquo; Waggoner said. &ldquo;We are eager to defend Kaley&rsquo;s First Amendment rights and ensure that government officials may not impose their ideology on private conversations between counselors and clients.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Logan Washburn is a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">staff writer covering election integrity<\/a>.
