Media coverage highlights protests and mass resignations within agencies like⁢ the U.S. Digital ⁣Service, emphasizing the loss of skilled civil servants whose work supports critical services for millions of Americans, ⁢including Social Security ‍and veterans’ services.

Amidst⁣ these layoffs, the article points ⁤to a lesser-covered incident involving a contractor from the IRS, ⁤Charles Edward Littlejohn, who was sentenced to prison for ‌leaking tax details,⁤ including details from over 405,000 Americans and high-profile‍ individuals like⁣ former President⁣ Donald trump. The leak was much larger than initially reported, with media ⁣discussions focused heavily on the impact of job cuts⁤ rather than on the security risks posed by the data breach. This has affected, as of Feb. 26, about 30,000 employees in taxpayer-funded jobs who have been axed, according to New York Magazine.

What you have heard less about, I can assure you, is something that affected over 400,000 American taxpayers in one taxpayer-funded job: namely, the mass release of their information by an anti-Trump IRS contractor whose data leaks were six times greater than we were initially told, according to reports.

Last February, Charles Edward Littlejohn was sentenced to five years in prison, according to a media release by the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. After all the climbing over each other that media sources did to try to get his tax returns, they were fairly quotidian for a billionaire.

“Between August 2019 and October 2019, Littlejohn disclosed to a news organization the tax return information associated with the high-ranking government official. In the Spring of 2020, Littlejohn stole additional tax return information associated with the high-ranking government official and provided it to the news organization,” the media release continued.

“In September 2020, the news organization published the first of several articles that publicly disclosed information contained in the high-ranking government official’s tax returns,” the release added.

“In July and August 2020, Littlejohn separately stole tax returns and return information associated with thousands of the nation’s wealthiest individuals. In November 2020, Littlejohn disclosed this tax return information to a second news organization, which has since published nearly 50 articles using the information provided by Littlejohn.”

Now, according to Politico, the IRS told the House Judiciary Committee that roughly 70,000 businesses and individuals had their data stolen and leaked by Littlejohn.

However, at the end of last month, the IRS admitted that number was a little off. Reports have highlighted the distress surrounding USAID’s downsizing and NOAA staff protesting cuts through song outside their headquarters in late February. Additionally, there’s been attention on the United States Digital Service, where many staff members submitted a mass resignation letter due to workforce reductions that hindered their ability to fulfill their duties. Elon Musk commented that these employees were likely facing termination regardless of their resignations.

The resignation letter emphasized that these skilled civil servants were crucial in modernizing essential services like Social Security and disaster relief, and their departure jeopardizes millions of Americans who depend on these services daily. As of February 26, around 30,000 taxpayer-funded jobs have been eliminated.

However, less discussed is a significant incident affecting over 400,000 taxpayers: an IRS contractor leaked sensitive information at a scale much larger than initially reported. Charles Edward Littlejohn was sentenced to five years for accessing and leaking tax returns belonging to high-ranking officials—including then-President Trump—revealing nothing particularly scandalous about his finances.

Recent disclosures indicate that approximately 70,000 individuals had data compromised; however, the IRS later corrected this figure to over 405,000 affected parties. This occurred while those laid-off U.S. Digital Service employees were engaged in critical work.

Despite the enormity of this data breach compared to job losses within government agencies due to efficiency measures—where one contractor’s actions impacted far more individuals than those losing jobs—the media has largely overlooked it.
