Additionally, about a dozen agents ‌from the Bureau of⁣ alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives will be reassigned to‌ assist with this initiative.

Martin’s actions are part‌ of a response to concerns about rising crime rates in the city, which peaked in recent years and are now begining to decline. He attributes ⁢the prior increases in⁣ crime partly to the policies of‌ his predecessor, Matthew ⁤graves, accusing him of prioritizing political prosecutions over addressing⁢ violent crime. Despite recent improvements, crime statistics show a mixed picture, with violent crime decreasing but homicides increasing by 11%.

Moreover, Martin’s stance aligns with President Donald Trump’s previous ‌criticisms of D.C.’s ‌safety and ⁣public administration. While he has not yet been Senate-confirmed as the top prosecutor for ⁤D.C.,Martin’s measures signal a important shift in law enforcement priorities under his leadership. There has been mention⁣ of collaboration with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on public safety issues, highlighting a potential partnership between local and federal efforts to‍ reduce crime.

Acting US attorney for DC launches crackdown on gun crimes: ‘Make DC Safe Again’

Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Ed Martin established an initiative to pursue firearms cases in an effort to deter violent crime in Washington.

Martin announced a “Make D.C. Property crimes are down 10%, while burglaries have risen by 9%.

The overall dip comes after the district experienced spikes in crime between 2021 and 2023, per the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council for the District of Columbia.
