This legislation responds \u2064to incidents where\u200c anti-Israel protesters have\u200b waved \u2062these flags, including a \u200cnotable event where protesters in Washington Square Park held a vigil for a Hezbollah leader while chanting slogans perceived as anti-Semitic. Proposed by Democratic State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal and \u200bAssemblyman Micah Lasher, the\u200d bill would \u2062categorize the \u2064act of raising such flags as a Class E felony, expanding \u200bthe \u200ddefinition of aggravated\u2063 harassment.\u200b Lasher \u2062emphasized the need for this legislation in combating rising anti-Semitism, citing recent \u2063instances of harassment\u200c against Jewish individuals in\u2063 New York. \u2064Hoylman-Sigal referenced existing laws against displaying symbols of hate groups, arguing for the necessity to address \u2064the glorification\u2064 of terrorist organizations. A Hezbollah flag was waving as the crowd chanted what are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.org\/translatehate\/From-the-River-to-the-Sea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">widely perceived<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/auschwitz-birkenau-site-vandalized-with-anti-semitic-slogans\/\" title=\"Auschwitz-Birkenau Site Vandalized With ... Slogans\">anti-semitic slogans<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Democratic State Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal and Democratic Assemblyman Micah Lasher are set to introduce the measure this week. The Stand Against Flags of Enemy Terrorists Act would make raising the flags a Class E felony by expanding the definition of aggravated harassment to include displaying a symbol of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/lawmakers-consider-enacting-statute-to-increase-punishments-for-domestic-terrorism\/\" title=\"Lawmakers consider en...ing statute to increase punishments for domestic terrorism\">foreign terrorist organization<\/a> with the intent to harass, annoy, or threaten another person.<\/p>\n<p>Lasher <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/02\/us-news\/anti-israel-protesters-with-terror-group-flags-could-land-4-years-behind-bars-under-new-ny-state-bill\/\">told<\/a> the <em>New York Post<\/em> that protesters &ldquo;cross the line&rdquo; when they brandish symbols and flags championing a terrorist organization.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&ldquo;The SAFETY Act will establish an important new tool in the fight against dangerous antisemitism that has sickeningly flourished since the horrific terrorist attack against Israel on October 7th,&rdquo; Lasher said.<\/p>\n<p>Hoylman-Sigal mentioned how New York already prohibits displaying symbols of Neo-Nazis and the KKK, and legislation should be passed to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">prohibit glorifying foreign terrorist groups<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Since the October 7th terror attack in Israel, we&rsquo;ve witnessed a disturbing rise in antisemitic instances here at home, including using symbols and flags of terrorist organizations to harass and intimidate Jewish New Yorkers at their synagogues, businesses and homes, simply because they&rsquo;re Jewish,&rdquo; Hoylman-Sigal said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/foreign-policy\/3227657\/trump-national-security-picks-loyalty-america-first-pro-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>TRUMP NATIONAL SECURITY PICKS: LOYALTY, AMERICA FIRST, AND PRO-ISRAEL<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just last week, anti-Israel protesters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/education\/3333688\/nypd-makes-arrests-after-pro-palestine-student-protest-turns-violent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">took over<\/a> a building on Barnard College&rsquo;s campus and assaulted a security guard. Gov.
