Crimo, 24, quickly made his plea before\u2062 the trial commenced, admitting to killing seven people and injuring nearly 50 others during the incident,\u2062 where \u200dhe fired from a rooftop \u2062onto\u200d parade \u200dattendees. Following the shooting, he\u200b fled to Wisconsin, where he\u200d was\u2062 arrested on\u200b his return. \u2062His trial has had various\u2062 twists,including a withdrawal from a\u2063 guilty plea deal and his brief decision to represent\u200c himself. Crimo III pleaded guilty on Monday to 21 counts of first-degree murder and 48 counts of attempted murder stemming from the July 4, 2022, mass shooting in the affluent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Chicago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Chicago<\/a> suburb of Highland Park, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Illinois\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Illinois<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Crimo entered the plea quickly before opening statements were supposed to begin. The 24-year-old suspect made no additional statements before he left the Lake County Courthouse.<\/p>\n<p>Police have said that on July 4, 2022, Crimo climbed up a fire escape to the rooftop of a building above Highland Park&rsquo;s parade route and began shooting bullets at the spectators below.<\/p>\n<p>Crimo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/victims-july-4-highland-park-parade-shooting-rcna36636\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">killed<\/a> Stephen Straus, 88; Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza, 78; Eduardo Uvaldo, 69; Katherine Goldstein, 64; Jacquelyn Sundheim, 63; and married couple Kevin McCarthy, 37, and Irina McCarthy, 35.<\/p>\n<p>After the shooting, Crimo made it home, where he then took his mother&rsquo;s car and drove about two hours north to Madison, Wisconsin. There, he allegedly considered staging another massacre at another July Fourth gathering. He was arrested upon returning to Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors turned over around 10,000 pages of evidence and a videotaped interrogation, evidence in which police say Crimo confessed to the mass shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Crimo&rsquo;s guilty plea was the latest twist in his trial. A year after his arrest, Crimo fired his public defenders and said he would represent himself at trial. Then, a month later, he asked a judge to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/crime-courts\/robert-e-crimo-iii-appoint-public-defender-rcna132547\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">reinstate his public defender<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last June, Crimo surprised the court by deciding at the last minute to forgo an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/hunter-biden-legal-troubles-dog-white-house-washington-photos-of-the-week\/\" title=\"Hunter Biden&#039;s legal issues haunt the White House: Washington&#039;s Week in Photos.\">expected plea deal<\/a> and instead entered a plea of not guilty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3244610\/four-big-deadlines-2025-trump-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>FOUR BIG DEADLINES IN 2025 THAT WILL TEST GOP TRIFECTA LEADERSHIP<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Crimo&rsquo;s father, Robert Crimo Jr., previously pleaded guilty to seven felony counts of reckless conduct and was later sentenced to 60 days in prison for his role in agreeing to sponsor the gun application for his son, who was 19 years old at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Crimo is facing life in prison for killing seven people and wounding nearly 50 more. The death penalty was abolished in Illinois in 2011.
