This declaration comes after the group’s imprisoned leader, Abdullah Ocalan, called for disarmament during a recent visit from Kurdish politicians.‌ The PKK stated that the ceasefire ⁤is intended ⁤to facilitate the implementation of ocalan’s vision for peace and a democratic society, emphasizing that their forces will refrain from armed action unless provoked.

This advancement follows ongoing changes in the regional geopolitical landscape, ‌including shifts in Syria and the weakening of Hezbollah⁢ in Lebanon. Erdogan’s governance⁤ has yet ‌to formally respond but suggested that this could be a pivotal moment towards achieving a terror-free Turkey. The conflict with the PKK, which is deemed ⁣a‍ terrorist association by Turkey and its Western allies, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths as it began in 1984. The ceasefire marks one of the first steps towards renewed peace talks, which ⁤had previously stalled in 2015.

In a broader ‌context, erdogan’s government may be seeking Kurdish ⁣support to reform the constitution, aiming to secure his continued leadership beyond the end of his current term in 2028. While some Kurdish factions welcome these developments, others, such as the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, ⁤do not recognize ⁢the PKK’s ceasefire as relevant to their ⁤operations in Syria. The Turkish government insists that ⁣all Kurdish groups associated with the PKK must disband⁤ to move forward.

Kurdish militants declare a ceasefire in a 40-year insurgency in Turkey

ISTANBUL (AP) — Kurdish militants who have waged a 40-year insurgency in Turkey declared a ceasefire on Saturday in what could mark a significant boost to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government, two days after their imprisoned leader called for the group to disarm.

The announcement by the Kurdistan Workers’
