Kathy Hochul <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/protecting-reproductive-freedom-governor-hochul-signs-legislation-affirming-new-yorks-status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed legislation<\/a> at the beginning of February <strong>that shields prescribers<\/strong> of dangerous abortion pills to pregnant women from accountability. A new letter sent on behalf of &ldquo;thousands&rdquo; of doctors, however, warns Hochul that her attempt to force Empire State pharmacies to replace the name of healthcare professionals who prescribe drugs like mifepristone and misoprostol with the name or address of their practice puts women at risk and should be rescinded.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Concealing doctors&rsquo; identity recklessly endangers the patients we&rsquo;re meant to serve,&rdquo; the American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs (AAPLOG) wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/aaplog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/2025.02.24-AAPLOG-letter-to-Kathy-Hochul.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> to Hochul. &ldquo;It compounds the risks of telehealth prescription of mifepristone without in-person consultations, and the barriers it creates to identifying prescribing physicians could mean the difference between life and death for patients.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-151840639\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In addition to putting women and babies&rsquo; lives on the line, New York, according to AAPLOG, is making it easier for providers to shirk their duties to give patients &ldquo;transparency and accountability&rdquo; instead of &ldquo;obfuscation and barriers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As physicians, when we prescribe a medication, our job goes beyond simply writing the order for that medication,&rdquo; the letter states. &ldquo;Patients deserve a doctor who can assess their individual risks for a drug &ndash; for mifepristone this assessment necessitates an in-person consultation &ndash; accompany them through their entire course of care, and ensure their successful and complete treatment.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The New York State legislature&rsquo;s Democrat majority put the bill on Hochul&rsquo;s desk <strong>just days after <\/strong>the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/new-york-doctor-indicted-prescribing-abortion-pill-louisiana-rcna190214\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Louisiana grand jury indictment<\/a> of New York Dr. Margaret Daley Carpenter. The legislators and Hochul&rsquo;s hope, which they have repeatedly and publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/protecting-reproductive-freedom-governor-hochul-signs-legislation-affirming-new-yorks-status\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emphasized<\/a>, is to make it harder for states with pro-life protections to enforce their laws against pro-abortion states and doctors&rsquo; activism.<\/p>\n<p>Louisiana charged Carpenter, the Abortion Coalition of Telemedicine founder and co-medical director, for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">prescribing abortion drugs online<\/a> <strong>taken by a pregnant <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/abortion-pills-new-york-hochul-12dc697d30967808aed9c3e4db2b1ff2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">minor<\/a> in Louisiana<\/strong>. Texas also <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/12\/16\/republicans-serious-about-protecting-life-should-follow-texas-in-prosecuting-abortion-pill-outlaws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sued<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/feb\/13\/texas-abortion-pills-shield-laws-new-york-doctor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fined<\/a> Carpenter for her role in prescribing the pill from more than 1500 miles away to a 20-year-old woman who went to the hospital with hemorrhaging complications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Data has shown<\/strong> the drug regimen Carpenter prescribed is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/medication-abortion-accounted-63-all-us-abortions-2023-increase-53-2020#:~:text=New%20Guttmacher%20Institute%20research%20from,the%20formal%20health%20care%20system.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">responsible<\/a> for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/article\/2022\/02\/medication-abortion-now-accounts-more-half-all-us-abortions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than half of the nation&rsquo;s abortions<\/a>,&nbsp;but it is known to cause side effects such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/prochoice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/phone_triage_guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hemorrhage<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/mifepristone-oral-route\/side-effects\/drg-20067123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;fast, weak pulse,&rdquo; &ldquo;trouble breathing,&rdquo; diarrhea, dizziness, headache, vomiting<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/mifepristone-oral-route\/side-effects\/drg-20067123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;pain&rdquo; across the back, arms, neck, and abdomen<\/a>. In some cases, the pills are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33939340\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fatal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>AAPLOG, citing examples of women like <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/20\/amber-thurman-died-from-the-abortion-pill-not-pro-life-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amber Thurman<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/24\/nations-top-ob-gyn-org-could-combat-lies-about-pro-life-laws-but-that-would-hurt-their-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Candi Miller<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2023\/sep\/28\/nevada-womans-death-after-taking-abortion-pills-sp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alyona Dixon<\/a> who suffered severe and even fatal complications as a result of abortion pills, expressed concern that the New York law &ldquo;will contribute to more tragic cases.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This new law makes doctors less accessible to the patients they&rsquo;re serving, erects hurdles for patients with follow-up questions, and adds time-consuming and potentially fatal roadblocks to medical consultations that could be necessary in the event of complications,&rdquo; the letter continued.<\/p>\n<p>CEO of AAPLOG Dr. Christina Francis said in a statement that if New York is &ldquo;truly concerned about protecting women,&rdquo; Hochul and her allies in the legislature &ldquo;should rescind this dangerous law.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>New York, under Hochul&rsquo;s watch and direction, has poured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-hochul-calls-us-supreme-court-protect-access-abortion-medication-mifepristone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">millions of dollars<\/a> into expanding its radical abortion regime by stockpiling abortion pills, shoring up legal loopholes for abortionists, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/13\/ny-ag-letitia-james-sues-pregnancy-centers-over-life-saving-abortion-pill-reversal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suing<\/a>&nbsp;pregnancy centers that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/republicans-should-follow-texas-in-suing-abortion-pill-outlaws\/\" title=\"Republicans Should Follow Texas In Suing Abortion Pill Out...s\">offer abortion pill reversals<\/a> to women who regret ingesting the life-ending drug.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
