CISA, originally established in 2018 to address cybersecurity threats, quickly transformed into a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">government-run censorship operation<\/a>, particularly during the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>In response, the propaganda press has been scrambling to defend CISA&rsquo;s expanded role in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/all-out-chaos-at-gaetz-presser-as-congressman-flees-from-leftist-aggressors\/\" title=\"All Out Chaos At Gaetz Presser, As Congressman Flees From Leftist Aggressors\">silencing free speech<\/a> for several weeks now.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2049473894\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>VoteBeat&rsquo;s Jessica Huseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.votebeat.org\/2025\/02\/27\/cisa-election-cybersecurity-homeland-kristi-noem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> that &ldquo;the Trump administration has begun to overhaul CISA in a way that has election officials across the country worried that U.S. elections will not be as robustly monitored and secured as they were in 2024. The process started with divisions concerned with election security and misinformation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Politico&rsquo;s John Sakellariadis and Maggie Miller headlined their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/02\/07\/trump-guts-cyber-workers-00203087\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">piece<\/a>: &ldquo;Trump continues federal purge, gutting cyber workers who combat disinformation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The agency became the subject of Trump&rsquo;s fury after CISA took steps to call out misinformation and disinformation during the 2020 presidential election,&rdquo; Sakellariadis and Miller wrote. But CISA wasn&rsquo;t calling out &ldquo;misinformation and disinformation.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Wired&rsquo;s Eric Geller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/cisa-election-security-freeze-memo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>, &ldquo;The move represents the first major example of the country&rsquo;s cyberdefense agency accommodating President Donald Trump&rsquo;s false claims of election fraud and online censorship.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>During the 2020 election, CISA &mdash; which has been described as the &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/09\/30\/these-house-republicans-voted-to-fund-cisas-criminal-censorship-and-election-interference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nerve center<\/a>&rdquo; of the government&rsquo;s censorship operations &mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/23\/docs-cisa-knew-risks-of-mail-in-voting-in-2020-but-got-posts-about-them-censored-anyway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">classified<\/a> social media posts that raised concerns about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/election-integrity\/commentary\/the-risks-mail-voting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unsupervised mail-in voting<\/a> as &ldquo;disinformation&rdquo; before flagging them to be censored, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/aflegal.org\/bombshell-documents-america-first-legal-lawsuit-reveals-cisa-knew-about-mail-in-voting-risks-in-2020-while-censoring-related-narratives-as-disinformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">documents<\/a> obtained by America First Legal. <\/p>\n<p>Internally, however, CISA was circulating a six-point list warning about the risks to the mail-in voting process.<\/p>\n<p>In November of 2023, House Republicans released an <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/11\/07\/government-censorship-op-targeted-the-federalists-mollie-hemingway-sean-davis-during-2020-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interim report<\/a> revealing that CISA and the State Department&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/04\/19\/meet-the-shadowy-group-that-ran-the-federal-governments-censorship-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Engagement Center<\/a> &ldquo;colluded with Stanford University to pressure Big Tech companies into censoring what they claimed to be &lsquo;disinformation&rsquo; during the 2020 election,&rdquo; as <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/08\/fbi-confirms-its-restarting-online-censorship-efforts-ahead-of-2024-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> by The Federalist&rsquo;s Shawn Fleetwood.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/08\/fbi-confirms-its-restarting-online-censorship-efforts-ahead-of-2024-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">At the request<\/a>&rdquo; of CISA, the Election Integrity Partnership (EIP) was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/05\/03\/lawsuit-shows-governments-hands-all-over-the-election-integrity-partnerships-censorship-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">created<\/a> to &ldquo;monitor and censor Americans&rsquo; online speech&rdquo; ahead of the 2020 election, according to the interim report. The EIP is made up of &ldquo;disinformation academics&rdquo; who coordinated with GEC and the Department of Homeland Security. The <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/11\/07\/government-censorship-op-targeted-the-federalists-mollie-hemingway-sean-davis-during-2020-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EIP<\/a>, according to the House report, flagged &ldquo;true information, jokes and satire, and political opinions&rdquo; and then submitted the posts to Big Tech companies for censorship.<\/p>\n<p>CISA &ldquo;regularly <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/09\/30\/these-house-republicans-voted-to-fund-cisas-criminal-censorship-and-election-interference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">facilitated<\/a> meetings &lsquo;between Big Tech companies, and national security and law enforcement agencies to address &ldquo;mis-, dis-, and Mal-information&rdquo; on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-new-acting-attorney-general-jeff-rosen-recently-wrote-an-essay-on-foreign-influence-in-us-elections-this-tells-us-a-little-about-his-knowledge-of-whats-going-on-today\/\" title=\"The New Acting Attorney General Jeff Rosen Recently Wrote an Essay on Foreign Influence in US Elections \u2013 This Tells Us A Little About His Knowledge of What\u2019s Going On Today\">social media platforms<\/a>,&rsquo;&rdquo; as Fleetwood <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/08\/fbi-confirms-its-restarting-online-censorship-efforts-ahead-of-2024-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One leaked document <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/10\/31\/social-media-disinformation-dhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obtained<\/a> by The Intercept revealed that Microsoft executive and former DHS official Matt Masterson texted then CISA director Jen Easterly in 2022, saying, &ldquo;Platforms have got to get comfortable with gov&rsquo;t. It&rsquo;s really interesting how hesitant they remain.&rdquo; Under the Biden administration, Facebook had a portal where DHS could report &ldquo;disinformation,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/05\/why-cisas-censorship-and-election-interference-work-is-the-most-insidious-attack-on-american-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to The Intercept.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=htRlU0JKdGg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Easterly<\/a> once explained that the agency, which has targeted so-called &ldquo;malinformation&rdquo; (the agency <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/27\/biden-admin-grew-censorship-complex-to-silence-true-but-inconvenient-malinformation-weaponization-committee-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defines<\/a> &ldquo;malinformation&rdquo; as anything &ldquo;based on fact, but used out of context to mislead, harm, or manipulate&rdquo;) wanted to secure the public&rsquo;s &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/02\/dhs-cybersecurity-agency-labels-your-private-thoughts-critical-infrastructure-to-justify-censoring-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cognitive infrastructure<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Last March, the DHS and CISA <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/01\/pennsylvania-partners-with-dhs-cisa-censors-to-target-election-speech-it-deems-a-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">partnered<\/a> with Pennsylvania to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/disinfo-guru-to-voters-trust-corporate-media-instead-of-doing-your-own-research\/\" title=\"Expert Advises Voters to Rely on Corporate Media Over Personal Research\">target election speech<\/a> it deemed a &ldquo;threat,&rdquo; like so-called &ldquo;misinformation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, the propaganda press is in full defense mode, worried the days of unchecked government control over online speech may be numbered. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
