The plan‌ passed with a narrow vote of 26 too 23. Supporters, including‍ vice Mayor Walter Burnett Jr., argued that delaying investments coudl lead to further deterioration of city infrastructure, such ‍as increasing potholes and unsafe buildings. However, dissenting voices like Alderman Anthony Beale raised concerns about the‌ long-term financial ⁤implications, noting that the bond has no principal payments for two ⁣years⁤ and a large balloon payment thereafter.

Mayor Johnson ⁢defended the⁤ decision, emphasizing his commitment to investing in the community⁤ and creating jobs for city residents. The ⁢council meeting featured public criticism,⁣ with residents expressing dissatisfaction with the bond⁤ and the city’s ⁤sanctuary policies. Some called for fiscal alternatives, suggesting the mayor should consider other funding proposals. A motion to⁣ postpone the bond vote was deadlocked, ultimately allowing the borrowing to proceed. The next city council meeting is set for‍ March 12.

Chicago city council approves mayor’s borrowing plan despite objections

(The Center Square) – Chicago’s city council has approved Mayor Brandon Johnson’s $830 million bond issue.

By a vote of 26 to 23, aldermen said “yes” to the mayor’s plan to borrow the money for capital projects.

Alderman and Vice Mayor Walter Burnett Jr. warned of dire consequences if the bond deal didn’t pass.

“Putting off these investments will only cost more in the long term.
