Josh Schriver announced during a press conference his resolution, which would declare that &ldquo;the Michigan House of Representatives reaffirms the definition of marriage as put forth by the Michigan voters and enshrined in our Constitution: a union between one man and one woman.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Whitmer took to social media to condemn the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Here&rsquo;s my response to that: Hell no,&rdquo; Whitmer said.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution started out with 12 co-sponsors but has since dropped to six.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Schriver is seeking to challenge the Supreme Court&rsquo;s 2014 ruling in <em>Obergefell v. Hodges<\/em>, which legalized same sex marriage nationwide. Schriver called the Supreme Court&rsquo;s ruling anti-Christian and anti-family.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Ten years ago, the United States Supreme Court redefined the sacred institution of marriage,&rdquo; Schriver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilx.com\/2025\/02\/26\/michigan-lawmakers-introduce-legislation-overturn-same-sex-marriage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">said<\/a>. &ldquo;This blunder compromised the mother, father, and child family unit. This decision deprived children of the fundamental right to be raised by a mother and a father.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Other states such as Idaho, Iowa, and Montana have introduced similar measures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas suggested in his concurring opinion for the 2022 court decision overturning <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> that this decision should allow the court to reconsider other historic rulings, such as <em><em>Obergefell v. Hodges<\/em><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We cannot afford to be complacent, just as Clarence Thomas has already called to reconsider marriage equality,&rdquo; openly gay Democratic state Rep. Jason Morgan said in a press conference. &ldquo;We know the threat is real, and we must act to protect the rights of all Michiganders.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Republican House Speaker Matt Hall <a href=\"https:\/\/michiganadvance.com\/2025\/02\/26\/as-a-michigan-republican-made-his-case-to-ban-same-sex-marriage-a-gay-democrat-stole-the-show\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">said<\/a> the bill would not survive out of committee.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I would say a lot of Republicans disagree with Rep. Schriver on the issue, and so what we&rsquo;re trying to do is focus on issues that unify our caucus and bring people together, and those are the issues that we&rsquo;re moving forward and putting on our agenda,&rdquo; Hall said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3252920\/republicans-turn-next-year-governor-battle-party-2024-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>REPUBLICANS TURN TO 2025 GOVERNOR BATTLES AS PARTY LOOKS TO RIDE 2024 SUCCESS<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Schriver did not take questions at his press conference, but the state&rsquo;s first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sen-schumer-says-senate-will-vote-on-same-sex-marriage-bill-in-september\/\" title=\"Sen. Bill in September\">openly gay senator<\/a>, Jeremy Moss, took the opportunity to slam the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think that people respect their LGBTQ neighbors, their LGBTQ family members.
