He led the DOJ&rsquo;s classified documents and January 6 cases against Trump. The firm cited in Trump&rsquo;s memo, Covington &amp; Burling, provided pro bono services to Smith.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before resigning, Smith shared in a disclosure form with the DOJ that he had received $140,000 worth of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/migration-lobbies-slam-washposts-exposure-of-white-house-splits\/\" title=\"Migration Lobbies Slam WashPost&#039;s Exposure of White House Splits\">free legal advice<\/a> from the firm to help him prepare for investigations and legal action by Trump&rsquo;s allies.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As a result of those actions, we&rsquo;re now going to be suspending and putting under review security clearances for employees at that firm and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/5-hollywood-stars-who-say-bring-on-cancel-culture\/\" title=\"5 Hollywood Stars Who Say, \u2018Bring on Cancel Culture\u2019\">holding people responsible<\/a>,&rdquo; White House staff secretary Will Scharf said in the Oval Office earlier on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The memo also orders the Office of Management and Budget to evaluate all contracts with the law firm.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I also direct the Attorney General and heads of agencies to take such actions as are necessary to terminate any engagement of Covington &amp; Burling LLP by any agency to the maximum extent permitted by law and consistent with the memorandum that shall be issued by the Director of the Office of Management and Budget,&rdquo; the directive says.<\/p>\n<p>Before sending out the memo, Trump quipped that they would call it the &ldquo;deranged&nbsp;Jack Smith&nbsp;signing.&rdquo; When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2025\/02\/25\/trump-covington-burling-jack-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">he was asked<\/a> whether he was targeting the law firm, Trump said: &ldquo;I was targeted. &hellip; Don&rsquo;t talk to me about targeting.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The firm said it would protect Smith amid the Trump administration&rsquo;s scrutiny of the entities surrounding him.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For more than 100 years, Covington has represented clients facing government investigations, consistent with the best traditions of the legal profession,&rdquo; a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/25\/us\/trump-jack-smith-law-firm-security.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">statement<\/a> from Covington &amp; Burling said. &ldquo;We recently agreed to represent Jack Smith when it became apparent that he would become a subject of a government investigation.
