These ⁢events, which involve false emergency calls leading law enforcement to treat ‍the targeted individuals as threats, have sparked concerns for politicians’ safety. The ⁤proposed Senate Bill ⁢199 will redact identifiable⁣ home addresses from any records released by the state ethics commission. ⁤While some‍ lawmakers raised concerns about how this could affect residency⁤ challenges, the bill’s sponsor, Senator Sam Watson, assured that addresses would still‌ need to ⁢be filed but would be kept confidential in public disclosures. The measure is seen as a necessary step to protect⁤ politicians, especially after incidents leading to violence in the state. The bill⁤ will now proceed to the ⁢Senate Rules Committee before being voted on ‍by the full chamber.

Legislation to shield politicians’ addresses advances in Georgia Senate

The Georgia Senate Ethics Committee unanimously advanced legislation that would shield the addresses of politicians and political candidates after an uptick in threats in recent years.

“Swatting” incidents, typically someone calling law enforcement with a false report in an effort to put the victim of the action in danger of being treated as a threat, have been increasingly used against politicians and political candidates in recent years, especially during Christmas 2023.

Georgia State Ethics Commission members, from right, Executive Director David Emadi, Chairman James Kreyenbuhl, and Vice Chairman Rick Thompson attend an Ethics Commission meeting, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, in Atlanta.
