As claims about DOGE supposedly posing a threat to the Treasury gained traction, it\u200c seems rather ironic that the actual risk came from within the \u2063Treasury itself. Yet Americans are supposed to be concerned about DOGE?<\/p>\n<p>For weeks Democrats have cried wolf over Elon Musk and DOGE supposedly plotting a &ldquo;hostile takeover of the Treasury Department&rdquo; and putting sensitive taxpayer information at risk. <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/02\/07\/democrats-more-panicked-about-doge-accessing-feds-computers-than-chinese-hackers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Democrats<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.democrats.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/leader-schumer-leads-senate-democrats-in-demanding-secretary-bessent-meet-with-senate-democrats-to-bring-transparency-and-clarity-to-doge-chaos-at-treasury-senate-dems-call-doges-hostile-takeover-a-dangerous-compromise-of-americans-privacy-and-economic-and-national-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feigned outrage<\/a> that DOGE would have &ldquo;access to the management and disbursement of trillions of dollars and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/brazenly-ignoring-the-law-texas-sues-facebook-for-using-facial-recognition-to-harvest-personal-information\/\" title=\"&#039;Brazenly Ignoring&#039; the Law: Texas Sues Facebook for Using Facial Recognition to Harvest Personal Information\">highly sensitive information<\/a> of millions of Americans.&rdquo; They even held a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WPCl6Y6vGhU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press conference<\/a> attacking DOGE for being granted read-only access to the Treasury Department&rsquo;s payment system.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-998365721\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the left-wing press has echoed these faux concerns.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Elon Musk&rsquo;s DOGE presence at the IRS raises concerns about taxpayer data security, refund delays,&rdquo; CBS News&rsquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/musk-doge-trump-irs-taxpayer-data-idrs-wyden-warren-letter\/\">Aime<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/musk-doge-trump-irs-taxpayer-data-idrs-wyden-warren-letter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">e Picchi<\/a> wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post&rsquo;s Jacob Bogage and Jeff Stein <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2025\/02\/16\/doge-irs-access-taxpayer-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> that &ldquo;Musk&rsquo;s DOGE seeks access to personal taxpayer data, raising alarm at IRS.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>But for all the &ldquo;concern&rdquo; and &ldquo;alarm&rdquo; ringing going on, it seems Americans have more reason to be concerned with employees of the Treasury Department than a billionaire who legitimately doesn&rsquo;t need or want taxpayer information. <\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-judiciary.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/Jordan%20%20%28Data%20Breach%20and%20Security%29%20-%20Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a> that Department of the Treasury Acting Commissioner Douglas W. O&rsquo;Donnell sent to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan on Feb. 14, Charles Littlejohn &ldquo;inappropriately accessed or leaked&rdquo; the information of 405,427 taxpayers, 89 percent of whom are &ldquo;business entities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Littlejohn had previously been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/archives\/opa\/pr\/irs-consultant-charged-disclosing-tax-return-information-news-organizations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charged<\/a> in 2023 for allegedly disclosing tax return information to two news organizations that were not explicitly listed. This taxpayer information was leaked to ProPublica, which used the data &ldquo;to report its &lsquo;Secret IRS Files&rsquo; series,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/irs-charges-consultant-leaking-tax-information-propublica-nytimes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to ProPublica.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The vast dataset contained details on thousands of wealthy Americans, and ProPublica reported dozens of stories based on an analysis of it,&rdquo; ProPublica said. ProPublica&rsquo;s Editor-in-Chief Stephen Engelberg denied knowing the identity of the source when charges were made public.<\/p>\n<p>A second leak by Littlejohn that included information regarding a &ldquo;high-ranking government official&rdquo; &ldquo;appears to match The New York Times&rsquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/09\/27\/us\/donald-trump-taxes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reporting<\/a> on the taxes of Donald Trump,&rdquo; ProPublica reported. <\/p>\n<p>But Musk and DOGE are the <em>real<\/em> concerns? <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
