Trump has vowed to carry out the &ldquo;largest-ever&rdquo; deportation operation.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alabama<\/h2>\n<p>In mid-February, the Alabama Senate passed a measure that would allow local jails to detain individuals in custody until one&rsquo;s immigration status can be confirmed as opposed to releasing them.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If you come to the country legally, if you come into Alabama legally, then these bills don&rsquo;t affect you,&rdquo; said Republican state Sen. Wes Kitchens in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apr.org\/news\/2025-02-14\/alabama-legislative-proposals-mirror-trumps-immigration-crackdown-push\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Florida<\/h2>\n<p>Earlier this month, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed a broad immigration bill that sought to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the state, as well as required the state attorney general to sue any municipality that refused to hold illegal immigrants in jail until Immigration and Customs Enforcement could arrive on the scene and transfer that person into federal custody.<\/p>\n<p>ICE tracks state and local databases nationwide and will wedge detainers with local police precincts to hold on to a person in custody until federal officers can physically arrive on the scene and transfer custody of that individual.<\/p>\n<p>Localities that refuse to cooperate face fines of up to $5,000.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Georgia<\/h2>\n<p>Georgia already had a law on the books that required local police to identify and detain illegal immigrants who come into custody or risk losing state funding and face possible misdemeanor charges.<\/p>\n<p>However, new legislation by Republican state Sen. Blake Tillery would allow the state to file lawsuits against city officials who let sanctuary policies prevail. The Senate recently passed his bill, which is now before the House.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Louisiana<\/h2>\n<p>Shortly before Trump took office, Louisiana passed a law that mandated law enforcement &ldquo;use best efforts&rdquo; to enforce immigration law and keep criminal illegal immigrants in custody for ICE to take custody of rather than releasing them.<\/p>\n<p>The New Orleans Parish Sheriff&rsquo;s Office refused ICE&rsquo;s requests that the local police detain all criminal offenders. <\/p>\n<p>Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill recently sued the sheriff&rsquo;s department on the basis that the state has violated the anti-sanctuary law.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff&rsquo;s office maintained in a statement that it &ldquo;remains in full compliance with all applicable state laws and valid court orders related to ICE detainers,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-sanctuary-cities-trump-states-ea9cb51f2b46189918e2a70b1c91c603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according to<\/a> the <em>Associated Press<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Hampshire<\/h2>\n<p>Separate House and Senate bills going through the state legislature in New Hampshire take aim at the matter in different ways.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate legislation would let the state attorney general sue a local county or city government if the locality moves not to work with ICE. It could also face a loss of 25% of state funding.<\/p>\n<p>The House version does not include the fine but lays out more specific measures that local authorities must walk in line with ICE.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">South Dakota<\/h2>\n<p>Until January, Kristi Noem was governor of South Dakota before being replaced by Gov. Larry Rhoden (R-SD) when she was confirmed to be Department of Homeland Security secretary.<\/p>\n<p>Rhoden quickly got to work and signed into law a ban on state and local policies that bar interactions with ICE regarding someone&rsquo;s immigration status.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tennessee<\/h2>\n<p>At present, Tennessee bans state economic development funding for local governments that have declared themselves a sanctuary zone.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, Gov. Bill Lee (R-TN) signed a law targeting local elected officials who vote in support of sanctuary policies with felony charges. Elected officials could face up to six years in prison for trying to bring about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wisconsin-governor-tony-evers-illegal-immigrants-are-still-wisconsinites\/\" title=\"Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers: ... Are Still \u2018Wisconsinites\u2019\">left-leaning immigration policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wyoming<\/h2>\n<p>Wyoming&rsquo;s state legislature has moved to block local city governments from refusing to hand over anything short of all criminal illegal immigrants to ICE.
