While there was a belief that a trial date may have been selected at the hearing, <em>ABC News <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/luigi-mangione-new-york-state-case-court-appearance-friday\/story?id=119008079\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"reports\">reported<\/a> that none was set.<\/p>\n<p>During the hearing, Mangione&rsquo;s attorneys reportedly alleged &ldquo;very serious issues&rdquo; with how police obtained evidence from their client. His lawyers also filed a motion to exclude some evidence that police in Altoona, Pennsylvania, obtained from him following his arrest from being used in the trial.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What charges does Mangione face?<\/h2>\n<p>Mangione faces 11 charges in New York over his alleged killing of Thompson on Dec. 4, 2024, outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan. He has pleaded not guilty to all state charges against him but has not yet entered a plea on <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">federal murder charges related<\/a> to the Thompson murder.<\/p>\n<p>The state charges include one count of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, four counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, and one count of criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree. Two of the murder charges were enhanced over &ldquo;intent to commit terrorism.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>If convicted, the maximum penalty Mangione could face for the state charges is life in prison without the possibility of parole. His federal charges have a maximum penalty of death.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the reaction to Mangione?<\/h2>\n<p>Mangione has gained some support for his actions, with a group of supporters gathering outside the courtroom to express sympathy for the accused murderer.
