During a speech addressing a gathering of governors, Trump questioned Mills \u200babout \u2062Maine&#8217;s \u200ccompliance \u2063with \u2062the order, highlighting that the National collegiate Athletic Association had already\u2063 adhered to it. Mills responded off-mic to affirm Maine&#8217;s commitment to state and federal laws, which led Trump to insist \u2063that, as federal law, non-compliance would risk Maine losing federal funding. Mills retorted,&#8221;See you in court!&#8221; to which Trump replied\u200b that he looked forward to the legal\u2063 battle.<\/p>\n<p>Following the exchange, Mills&#8217; office\u2064 released a statement \u2062declaring that the\u2064 state would take necessary \u2064legal actions \u2064to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-administration-slow-walks-plans-to-give-cubans-internet-access\/\" title=\"Biden Administration Slow-Walks Plans To Give Cubans Internet Access\">secure federal funding<\/a>\u2062 for Maine schools, dismissing Trump\u2019s threats \u2064as intimidation. the dispute raises questions about mills&#8217; commitment to supporting women and girls\u200d in\u200b sports, especially given \u2062her identity as the first female governor of Maine. Trump&#8217;s executive\u200d order emphasizes \u200dthe \u2062importance of Title IX, which mandates equal opportunities for women in education \u200band sports,\u200b and\u2062 asserts that ignoring biological\u200c differences undermines these opportunities. Janet Mills, Maine taxpayers might find themselves on the hook for Mills&rsquo; vanity project: a looming legal battle to defy Trump&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/02\/keeping-men-out-of-womens-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">order<\/a> to stop men from competing in women&rsquo;s sports.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange happened in the White House as Trump addressed governors from around the country gathered for the Governors Working Session.<\/p>\n<p>His speech covered numerous topics, including his Feb. 5 Executive Order to protect women and girls competing in sports, by keeping men and boys who masquerade as women from playing on women&rsquo;s teams.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Trump said the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) complied with the order &ldquo;immediately,&rdquo; but not the state of Maine. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>&#128680; Trump just BODIED the Governor of Maine<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Is Maine here? Are you not going to comply with it?&rdquo; Trump asked Gov. Janet Mills, striking up a conversation in the middle of his speech.<\/p>\n<p>Mills answered off microphone that Maine will comply with state and federal laws.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Well, we are the federal law,&rdquo; Trump said. Mills Said a few single words off microphone, but Trump talked over her. &ldquo;You better do it. You better do it, because you&rsquo;re not going to get any federal funding at all if you don&rsquo;t. And by the way, your population &hellip; doesn&rsquo;t want men playing in women&rsquo;s sports. So you better comply, because otherwise you&rsquo;re not getting any federal funding.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Mills retorted, &ldquo;See you in court!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Trump fired back without missing a beat.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Good, I&rsquo;ll see you in court. I look forward to that. That should be a really easy one,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;And enjoy your life after governor, because I don&rsquo;t think you&rsquo;ll be in elected politics.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>It was a shocking and thrilling flex. Trump then turned to the broader audience and repeated what he told Mills.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Every state has a responsibility to comply with Title IX. They have an obligation, a legal obligation, and we&rsquo;ll be enforcing aggressively, and we&rsquo;re going to be protecting our citizens,&rdquo; he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Rv_M410D-g0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Within an hour of the exchange, Mills had her public communications team whip up an uncompromising statement for the state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/governor\/mills\/news\/governor-mills-statement-presidents-threat-withhold-education-funding-maine-2025-02-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If the President attempts to unilaterally deprive Maine school children of the benefit of Federal funding,&rdquo; Mills threatened, &ldquo;my Administration and the Attorney General will take all appropriate necessary legal action to restore that funding and the academic opportunity it provides. The State of Maine will not be intimidated by the President&rsquo;s threats.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Democrats like Mills love to play identity politics. The second sentence of her biography on the state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/governor\/mills\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a> touts her amazing accomplishment of being female. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Governor Mills is the first woman governor of Maine,&rdquo; it reads, later adding that Mills is &ldquo;the first woman to be elected as a [district attorney] in New England,&rdquo; and &ldquo;In 2008, she was elected by her colleagues to serve as Attorney General of Maine, the first and only woman to hold the job.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>But what good is her girliness if she won&rsquo;t protect other women and girls? Her soon-to-be expensive and likely losing battle against Trump&rsquo;s order to allow women a safe space should mean the end of identity politics.<\/p>\n<p>If Mills breaks the &ldquo;Girl Code&rdquo; by failing to come to the aid of other women, her accomplishments in the name of womanhood are meaningless.<\/p>\n<p>Under Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/were-going-to-end-it-on-day-one-trump-slams-bidens-title-ix-rewrite\/\" title=\"Trump criticizes Biden&#039;s Title IX overhaul, vows to end it on day one\">educational institutions receiving federal funds<\/a> cannot deny women an equal opportunity to participate in sports.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Trump&rsquo;s order, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">citing previous federal court decisions<\/a>, notes that, &ldquo;ignoring fundamental biological truths between the two sexes deprives women and girls of meaningful access to educational facilities.&rdquo; The order also declares it U.S. policy &ldquo;to rescind all funds from educational programs that deprive women and girls of fair athletic opportunities,&rdquo; in opposition to &ldquo;the endangerment, humiliation, and silencing of women and girls.&nbsp;&ldquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It shall also be the policy of the United States to oppose male competitive participation in women&rsquo;s sports more broadly, as a matter of safety, fairness, dignity, and truth,&rdquo; the order reads.<\/p>\n<p>By late Friday afternoon, Trump&rsquo;s education department had already launched investigations into the Maine Department of Education and a school district in the state &ldquo;for allegedly ignoring President Donald Trump&rsquo;s executive order,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/sports\/maine-under-title-ix-investigation-after-trumps-fiery-exchange-governor-over-trans-inclusion-sports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to Fox News.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Beth Brelje is an elections correspondent for The Federalist.
