Similar to concerns \u2062raised about TikTok, lawmakers fear that DeepSeek could compromise user data and enable the spread of disinformation. Norman: DOJ Is Hiding How It\u2019s Complying with Biden\u2019s Voter Registration Drive\">federal agencies seeking<\/a> to improve efficiency and deliver value to the U.S. taxpayer, tools that provide our adversaries with advance warning of our government&rsquo;s plans and policies should be prohibited,&rdquo; Cotton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cotton.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/deepseek_omb_letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">said in a letter<\/a> addressed to Vought.<\/p>\n<p>DeepSeek, founded in 2023 by a Chinese hedge fund manager, upended markets when its AI assistant appeared in the Google and Apple stores in January<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">. It&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/27\/chinas-deepseek-ai-tops-chatgpt-app-store-what-you-should-know.html\" target=\"_blank\">quickly overtook<\/a><\/span>  ChatGPT as the iPhone&rsquo;s most downloaded free app. But the tool has prompted the same concerns plaguing TikTok, the Chinese-owned video-sharing platform.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have said the apps pose a threat to national security, giving China access to data on Americans and a bigger platform to spread disinformation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Researchers have found that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/31\/technology\/deepseek-chinese-propaganda.html\" target=\"_blank\">DeekSeek censors content<\/a><\/span>  critical of Chinese President Xi Jinping or the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n<p>Cotton, the No. 3 Republican in Senate leadership, supported the congressional push to divest TikTok of its Chinese ownership. Under a law signed last year, parent company ByteDance faced a nationwide ban unless it sold the app by January.
