Another commercial plane arriving from Minnesota flipped over during a crash landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Canada on Monday. The latest air disaster happened on international soil in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Still, top Democrats on the committee overseeing aviation slammed Trump for allowing layoffs and accused him of compromising safety. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Now is not the time to fire technicians who fix and operate more than 74,000 safety-critical pieces of equipment like radars, navigational aids, and communications technology,&rdquo; said Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA), the ranking member of the Commerce Committee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The FAA is already short 800 technicians, and these firings inject unnecessary risk into the airspace. In the aftermath of four deadly crashes in the last month, the FAA&rsquo;s safety workforce needs to be a priority for this administration,&rdquo; she added.<\/p>\n<p>Cantwell had previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/senate\/3314700\/elon-musk-ethics-outcry-plug-into-faa-air-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">raised concerns<\/a> about Musk&rsquo;s involvement in plans to &ldquo;remake&rdquo; U.S. airspace with rapid safety upgrades due to his business dealings at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/spacex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">SpaceX<\/a>. The senator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.senate.gov\/services\/files\/D6E242D8-614E-4FF2-8FB4-EC79ACABF3DF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">sent a letter<\/a> to Transportation Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/sean-duffy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Sean Duffy <\/a>asking him to bar Musk from any effort to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">reform air traffic control<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Rick Larsen (D-WA), the ranking member on the House Transportation Committee,&nbsp;called on the Trump administration to reverse the move on Tuesday, calling it a &ldquo;reckless purge.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Despite promising to spare aviation safety positions from their government-wide purge of public servants, the Trump Administration has now fired hundreds of safety-critical workers that the aviation system depends upon to function,&rdquo; he said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TransportDems\/status\/1891886786365853966\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">statement<\/a>. &ldquo;Conducting this reckless purge in the wake of the tragic crash at DCA and in the middle of a busy holiday weekend is a terrible idea that puts the traveling public at risk. The cause of the crash is still <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/dc-plane-crash-new-details-emerge-ntsb-investigation\/story?id=118820142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"under investigation\">under investigation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Transportation is insisting aviation regulators have retained &ldquo;employees who perform safety critical functions.&rdquo; The National Air Traffic Controllers Association said in a brief statement provided to the <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>on Tuesday that it was &ldquo;analyzing the effect of the reported federal employee terminations on aviation safety, the national airspace system and our members.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The news of the cuts comes as DOGE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/infrastructure\/3321812\/spacex-visit-faa-air-traffic-control-system-command-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">visited<\/a> the FAA&rsquo;s air traffic command center in Virginia on Monday. Duffy said he plans to travel to Oklahoma this week to learn more about the FAA&rsquo;s controller training academy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The firings at the FAA come as the agency has been dealing with a shortage of air traffic controllers for years.
