In recent years, failing health has forced him to use a wheelchair and, as recently as September, was forced to cancel public appearances because of &ldquo;flu-like&rdquo; symptoms, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pope-francis-ill-belgium-luxembourg-843dfa87718f376da2033a80b05ba396\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AP<\/a> reported at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the pontiff hasn&rsquo;t been without <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-liberal-truth-brigade-has-ties-to-billionaire-who-peddled-disinformation\/\" title=\"New Liberal \u2018Truth Brigade\u2019 Has Ties to Billionaire Who Peddled Disinformation\">political controversy<\/a> during more than a decade in the Vatican.<\/p>\n<p>He has shown a clear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/pope-francis-denigrates-conservatives-calls-suicidal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">distaste for American conservatives<\/a> and was an outspoken critic of now-President Donald Trump as far back as 2016, when he opposed then-candidate Trump and called him &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/USA\/Politics\/2016\/0218\/Donald-Trump-vs.-Pope-Francis-Game-changer-in-South-Carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not a Christian<\/a>&rdquo; because of his plans to crack down on illegal immigration.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, he released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/letters\/2025\/documents\/20250210-lettera-vescovi-usa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an open letter<\/a> to the bishops of the United States opposing what the letter described as &ldquo;mass deportation&rdquo; of illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>That strikes even many practicing American Catholics as hypocritical, considering that some of the most famous professing Catholics in American politics are former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ohio-archdiocese-denounces-decision-host-pro-abortion-president-biden-catholic-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe Biden<\/a> and former House Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/nancy-pelosis-archbishop-issues-major-declaration-prominent-catholics-support-evil-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nancy Pelosi<\/a>, Democrats whose political party fervently embraces abortion &mdash;
