Mike Waltz out of the House, appointing him as national security adviser, while Rep. Matt Gaetz resigned from Congress before his nomination for attorney general fizzled out.<\/p>\n<p>That leaves Republicans able to lose <a href=\"https:\/\/pressgallery.house.gov\/member-data\/party-breakdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">a single Republican<\/a> on the House floor for any vote.<\/p>\n<p>Senate leaders are mindful of the math as they process Trump&rsquo;s nominees. Republicans are trying to advance a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance-and-economy\/3319752\/gop-step-closer-major-tax-overhaul-panel-passes-budget-resolution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">budget resolution<\/a> that would unlock the president&rsquo;s agenda, with a House vote anticipated before the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Well, we&rsquo;re going to work with the speaker of the House on that. I&rsquo;m ready to go with her,&rdquo; said Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), the Senate majority whip. &ldquo;That would take the numbers out of the House down one, so we&rsquo;re going to make sure that we&rsquo;ll time it appropriately.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> her confirmation is a &ldquo;matter for the White House and the Senate to resolve and that he will be supportive of their approach.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>When asked about her nomination, the White House issued a brief statement calling Stefanik a &ldquo;great ally to President Trump.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We look forward to her serving as the Ambassador to the United Nations,&rdquo; press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rep. Both represent safe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cookpolitical.com\/cook-pvi\/2023-partisan-voting-index\/118-district-map-and-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">red districts<\/a> in Florida, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">special elections won&#038;rsquo<\/a>;t take place until April 1.<\/p>\n<p>There could be a protracted delay in seating Stefanik&rsquo;s successor as well. The New York Legislature, run by Democrats, had been considering a bill that would delay special elections until November.<\/p>\n<p>A vote on the bill was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityandstateny.com\/politics\/2025\/02\/hochuls-urging-legislative-leaders-delay-passage-special-elections-bill\/402872\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">paused<\/a>, apparently at the urging of Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY), but the election date is viewed as a possible bargaining chip in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/02\/10\/trump-new-york-congestional-pricing-00203344\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">negotiations<\/a> with the White House on congestion pricing. Democrats have <a href=\"https:\/\/cnycentral.com\/news\/new-york-news\/democrats-withdraw-bill-to-delay-ny-special-elections-fill-stefanik-seat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">cited<\/a> the cost of special elections in introducing the bill.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Johnson&rsquo;s office praised Stefanik, formerly the House GOP Conference chairwoman, as a &ldquo;team player&rdquo; as her nomination waits in the Senate. The Foreign Relations Committee held a confirmation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreign.senate.gov\/hearings\/nominations-01-21-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">hearing<\/a> on Jan. 21, one day after Trump took office. Her nomination then advanced to the Senate floor by voice vote on Jan. 30.<\/p>\n<p>Stefanik rose to national prominence as a combative Trump loyalist, defending the president in his first impeachment trial.
