Additionally, individuals involved \u200bin\u200d such chases would be ineligible for asylum in the U.S. and classified \u200bas\u200b deportable. Introduced by Rep. Gonzalez had been pursuing migrants on his all-terrain vehicle at the time of his death in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/5585\/text\">bill<\/a>, anyone who leads federal, state, or local police on a vehicle chase within 100 miles of the U.S. border would face up to two years in prison, a fine, or both.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation is meant to deal with the regular occurrence of high-speed chases up and down the 1,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cartels-took-advantage-of-northern-border-holes-when-agents-went-south-stefanik\/\" title=\"Cartels took &#039;advantage&#039; of northern ... holes when agents went south: Stefanik\">950-mile southern border<\/a> as human smugglers try to evade police while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wapo-during-trump-kids-in-cages-wapo-during-biden-migrant-facility-for-children\/\" title=\"WaPo During Trump: \u2018Kids In Cages\u2019; WaPo During Biden: \u2018Migrant Facility For Children\u2019\">moving illegal immigrants<\/a> or drugs into the country.<\/p>\n<p>The penalty is five to 20 years in prison if serious bodily injury is inflicted on the officer, a bystander, or those in the vehicle, while 10 years to life is mandated if someone dies in the incident.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, any person involved in a chase would be ineligible to seek asylum in the United States and deemed &ldquo;deportable.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ), who represents a border district, introduced the bill after hearing from community leaders in Arizona who urged him to make the chases a top legislative priority in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They unanimously said high-speed chases,&rdquo; Ciscomani <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3316573\/raul-gonzalez-officer-saftey-act-house-border-bill-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"told the Washington Examiner\">told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em><\/a>  in a phone call this week. &ldquo;These drivers are going 100 miles per hour, endangering law enforcement, but also all the innocent bystanders.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There have been incidents where innocent bystanders have been struck and killed, not to mention Raul Gonzalez,&rdquo; he added.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation passed the House <a href=\"https:\/\/clerk.house.gov\/Votes\/202425\">last January<\/a> with bipartisan support but died in the Democratic-controlled Senate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\"><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Republicans, now in unified control of Washington, have had more success this year with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-angel-parents-meet-with-house-republicans-on-countering-democrats-unfettered-immigration\/\" title=\"Exclusive: Angel Parents Meet with ...
