Ludwig argues \u200dthat there was a disconnect between the positive economic indicators\u2064 reported and the public&#8217;s actual experiences. He\u2064 suggests that many Democrats accepted the\u200c government statistics at face value,while Republicans\u200c were more skeptical and attuned to the economic realities on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Ludwig critiques various statistics, including the \u2064U-3 unemployment rate, for not accurately representing the state of employment, \u200dsuggesting that\u2063 a notable \u2064number\u2062 of\u200c Americans\u2064 were underemployed or had stopped looking for work, indicating a higher functional\u200c unemployment rate. He asserts that\u200d these misleading statistics\u200b obscure the true challenges faced\u200b by middle- and \u2064<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/heres-how-those-2000-stimulus-checks-promised-by-biden-became-only-1400\/\" title=\"Here\u2019s How Those ,000 Stimulus Checks Promised By Biden Became Only ,400\">lower-income households<\/a>, and while the Biden-Harris management \u200dhighlighted favorable\u2063 economic figures, the reality\u2062 for many Americans \u200dremained bleak.<\/p>\n<p>Ludwig emphasizes that a \u200crigorous press should question such data instead of blindly accepting and disseminating it,accusing outlets like politico of perpetuating a false narrative to support the Democratic agenda. He concludes that while some Democrats may have been &#8220;tricked,&#8221; the role of media in\u2064 shaping this perception cannot be overlooked, as\u2062 it has often failed to provide accurate representations of the economy&#8217;s health.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Politico released an <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ingrahamangle\/status\/1889404287027126558?s=46&amp;t=VL7JYC49nocdyMkQaKwyJg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis<\/a> on Tuesday: &ldquo;How Democrats were tricked into believing the economy was strong.&rdquo; In that analysis, former U.S. Comptroller of the Currency Eugene Ludwig <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/02\/11\/democrats-tricked-strong-economy-00203464\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained that<\/a> &ldquo;voters were right about the economy&rdquo; and it was the &ldquo;data&rdquo; that &ldquo;was wrong.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Before the presidential election, many Democrats were puzzled by the seeming disconnect between &lsquo;economic reality&rsquo; as reflected in various government statistics and the public&rsquo;s perceptions of the economy on the ground,&rdquo; Ludwig wrote. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Many in Washington &hellip; charged that right-wing echo chambers were conning voters into believing entirely preposterous narratives about America&rsquo;s decline,&rdquo; Ludwig continued.<\/p>\n<p>But as it turns out, it was Politico itself (and dozens of other propaganda outlets) that was &ldquo;conning&rdquo; the American people into believing the economy was prosperous.<\/p>\n<p>Take this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/10\/10\/harris-inflation-solid-economy-00183210\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Politico<\/a> article published in October of 2024: &ldquo;Harris is riding a dream economy into the election. It may be too late for voters to notice.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The numbers showed a &ldquo;solid economic picture&rdquo; and a &ldquo;remarkable victory&rdquo; for the Biden-Harris administration, according to the article, which cited statistics like the unemployment rate, the stock market, and gross domestic product (GDP).<\/p>\n<p>Less than a month later, Politico released yet another rave review about the economy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;&lsquo;Surprisingly strong&rsquo;: Economy shows robust growth in final report before election.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The economy&rsquo;s surprising resilience through the final months of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democratic-biden-supporter-forks-over-250000-to-help-nikki-haley\/\" title=\"Biden supporter donates 0,000 to aid Nikki Haley\">presidential campaign represents<\/a> a positive outcome for Vice President Kamala Harris as she makes her closing argument to voters,&rdquo; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/10\/30\/economy-robust-growth-00186247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> stated, adding, however, that voters were &ldquo;still incensed over still-elevated price levels since Biden and Harris entered office.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Months earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/02\/02\/biden-jobs-economy-00139282\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Politico<\/a> salivated at &ldquo;Biden&rsquo;s &lsquo;holy grail&rsquo; economy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-californians-leaving-for-texas-so-rapidly-u-haul-ran-out-of-trucks\/\" title=\"Report: Californians Leaving for Texas So Rapidly, U-Haul Ran Out of Trucks\">strong job market<\/a>, coupled with the end of price spikes, counters Republicans&rsquo; campaign message that the economy is weakening,&rdquo; the report stated. <\/p>\n<p>A separate Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/01\/25\/biden-administration-economic-growth-inflation-decrease-00137777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> said, &ldquo;Biden world is seeing signs of hope&rdquo; with the economy, framing the article around how &ldquo;US growth shatters expectations, boosting Biden&rsquo;s economic pitch.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s no mystery why Democrats thought they had a strong economic message: As conservative outlets were confronting the Biden-Harris administration and Democrats with the truth, propaganda press members like Politico were going into overdrive to cover for the disastrous economy &mdash; because that&rsquo;s what a propaganda press does. But while Democrats were screaming into their echo chamber, Americans were screaming out for help.<\/p>\n<p>Ludwig said that the &ldquo;government statistics were fundamentally flawed&rdquo; and &ldquo;misrepresentations&rdquo; of the economy. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What if, in fact, darker assessments of the economy were more authentically tethered to reality?&rdquo; Ludwig posited. He then noted that Democrats &ldquo;seemed much more inclined&rdquo; to believe what the government said about the economy, while &ldquo;Republicans &hellip; seemed more inclined to believe what they were seeing with their own two eyes.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ludwig went on to explain that the &ldquo;filters used to compute the headline statistics are flawed&rdquo; and &ldquo;paint a much rosier picture of reality than bears out on the ground.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ludwig cited the U-3 unemployment rate as misleading, explaining how that statistic does not include the number of Americans who are so discouraged by the job market that they&rsquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">ve stopped searching altogether<\/a>. He also notes how the unemployment statistic does not take into account &ldquo;the meagerness of any individual&rsquo;s income.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ludwig explained that if the government filtered the statistics to include people who can&rsquo;t find anything but part-time work or only make &ldquo;a poverty wage,&rdquo; then &ldquo;nearly one of every four workers is <em>functionally<\/em> unemployed in America today &mdash; hardly something to celebrate.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>(Notably, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/06\/07\/may-jobs-report-economy-00162268\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Politico<\/a> did its best to celebrate the numbers, calling Biden&rsquo;s labor market in June &ldquo;too hot to handle&rdquo; and lauding its &ldquo;surprising resilience&rdquo; that helps &ldquo;bolster President Joe Biden&rsquo;s economic messaging.&rdquo;)<\/p>\n<p>Ludwig then touched on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/consumer-prices-outpace-americans-wage-growth-as-inflation-surges\/\" title=\"Consumer Prices Outpace ...\u2019 Wage Growth As Inflation Surges\">weekly earnings<\/a>, explaining that if the government were to include unemployed workers and those in part-time work, the median weekly earnings number would drop from around $62,000 to approximately $52,000.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Think of that: American workers on the median are making 16 percent less than the prevailing statistics would indicate,&rdquo; Ludwig wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Ludwig also discussed how the inflation and GDP statistics were misleading and painted a better picture than reality showed.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;[Statistical discrepancies] all shroud the reality faced by middle- and lower-income households,&rdquo; Ludwig wrote. &ldquo;The last four years did not turn things around enough for the lower 60 percent of American income earners.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Biden-Harris administration kept touting <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/08\/21\/oops-biden-admin-admits-800000-jobs-it-took-credit-for-dont-exist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">faulty<\/a> and misleading statistics to sell the lie that the economy was thriving. That&rsquo;s expected, of course. But a functioning press would have questioned the numbers and data, not regurgitated them on demand. Instead, Politico parroted the data and dismissed the possibility that the government could be &mdash; gasp &mdash; misleading the public on purpose.<\/p>\n<p>So sure, maybe some Democrats were &ldquo;tricked.&rdquo; But it wasn&rsquo;t just because of misleading government statistics &mdash; it was because propagandists like Politico pushed a phony narrative to drag their preferred party across the finish line.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
