DeSantis emphasized the responsibility of the state to support the Trump Management&#8217;s goals regarding illegal immigration prevention. Ron DeSantis on Monday to advance legislation assisting with President Donald Trump&rsquo;s deportation of illegal aliens.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Florida always leads. We have a responsibility to enact policies that will help end the illegal immigration crisis once and for all, and our Republican leaders have been working tirelessly to do just that,&rdquo; DeSantis said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/eog\/news\/press\/2025\/note-press-florida-legislation-joint-proclamation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a> announcing the deal. &ldquo;With the enactment of these policies, Florida will help the Trump Administration to deliver on the President&rsquo;s historic mandate to end illegal immigration.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-681608395\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/florida\/article_15574fbe-e87e-11ef-b8f5-17e82d9997e6.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agreed-upon proposals<\/a> contain many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1884047188931609006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">policies<\/a> DeSantis put forward last month that were initially <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/02\/04\/nobody-is-buying-the-garbage-immigration-bill-florida-republicans-are-selling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rejected<\/a> by the legislature&rsquo;s GOP leadership. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2025C\/2C\/BillText\/Filed\/PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One<\/a> of the bills, for instance, includes penalties for local officials who institute edicts or ordinances &ldquo;refusing to comply with or otherwise directing local officials, employees, or others to refuse to comply with an immigration detainer issued by a federal immigration agency.&rdquo; If said individuals are suspected of committing such actions, the bill empowers the Florida attorney general to &ldquo;initiate judicial proceedings&rdquo; against them to &ldquo;enforce compliance.&rdquo; It also provides courts the ability to invalidate these local directives if they are found to be in violation of the law.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal additionally creates a State Board of Immigration Enforcement within the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is to be headed by the governor and his cabinet (&ldquo;the board&rdquo;). Tasked with being &ldquo;the chief immigration enforcement officer of the state,&rdquo; the board is required to &ldquo;appoint an executive director to assist in the implementation of its responsibilities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This officer will serve as the primary point of contact for Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) officials and ensure cooperation in &ldquo;the enforcement of federal immigration laws and other matters related to the enforcement of federal immigration laws,&rdquo; among other responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>A State Immigration Enforcement Council &mdash; comprised of law enforcement members appointed by the state&rsquo;s governor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/tokyo-olympics-set-to-go-on-regardless-of-covid-19-pandemic\/\" title=\"Tokyo Olympics Set To Go On \u2018Regardless\u2019 Of COVID-19 Pandemic\">chief financial officer<\/a>, attorney general, commissioner of agriculture, Senate president, and House speaker &mdash; would also be established under the current proposal. The council would exist to &ldquo;advis[e] the board&rdquo; on immigration-related matters. <\/p>\n<p>Provisions prohibiting the issuance of driver&rsquo;s licenses for all illegal aliens and in-state tuition for foreign nationals, along with increased penalties for illegal aliens caught &ldquo;willfully&rdquo; voting in U.S. elections and foreign criminal gang members, are also in the proposed legislation.<\/p>\n<p>As previously indicated, Monday&rsquo;s deal did not come without its headaches.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis&rsquo; initial call for a special session of the legislature last month to tackle illegal immigration was rebuffed by Senate President Ben Albritton and House Speaker Daniel Perez, both of whom are Republicans and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Daniel_PerezFL\/status\/1878933099729547734\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">referred<\/a> to the governor&rsquo;s request as &ldquo;premature.&rdquo; The legislative leaders then subsequently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/desantis-slams-floridas-legislature-for-trying-to-sabotage-pro-trump-immigration-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gaveled<\/a>&nbsp;into their own special session to ram through their preferred immigration legislation (deceptively named the &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=80842\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TRUMP Act<\/a>&ldquo;), which contained provisions <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1884047188931609006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seemingly<\/a> much weaker than those put forward by the governor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[READ:[READ:<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/02\/04\/nobody-is-buying-the-garbage-immigration-bill-florida-republicans-are-selling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nobody Is Buying The Garbage Immigration Bill Florida Republicans Are Selling<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The legislature&rsquo;s bill sought to&nbsp;effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wptv.com\/news\/palm-beach-county\/region-c-palm-beach-county\/gov-ron-desantis-palm-beach-county-1-30-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strip<\/a>&nbsp;oversight of immigration enforcement from the governor and give it to the state&rsquo;s agriculture commissioner, who would be designated as Florida&rsquo;s &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/28\/from-florida-to-texas-red-state-republicans-are-subverting-america-first-priorities-across-the-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/florida-gop-defies-desantis-with-early-exit-from-special-session-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Florida GOP defies DeSantis with early exit from special session - Washington Examiner\">chief immigration officer<\/a><\/a>.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>As The Federalist <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/02\/04\/nobody-is-buying-the-garbage-immigration-bill-florida-republicans-are-selling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, the position of agriculture commissioner is currently held by Wilton Simpson, a former Florida Senate president with a track record of being soft on illegal immigration enforcement. During his time as a legislator, for example, Simpson supported measures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2013\/235\/?Tab=BillHistory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">giving<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governing.com\/archive\/mct-dream-act-drivers-license-bill-vetoed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">temporary driver&rsquo;s licenses<\/a> and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidentsalliance.org\/floridas-in-state-tuition-for-dreamers-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in-state tuition<\/a>&nbsp;rates to certain&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2014\/0851\/?Tab=BillHistory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">foreign nationals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis and the legislature&rsquo;s new proposals will be considered by the latter in a special session this week.
