This meeting occurs one⁣ week after Trump proposed that the United States should “own” ⁣Gaza and develop it⁣ into what he called the “Riviera of ⁤the Middle East,” a suggestion that has faced criticism from Jordan and other ‌nations in the region. Jordan has historically been a mediator in Middle Eastern‍ conflicts, and King Abdullah ⁤has denounced Trump’s real estate-like approach to Gaza, expressing concerns‍ about the stability of Jordan due to Trump’s rhetoric.

The U.S. and Jordan have a‌ long-standing relationship, with Jordan⁢ receiving over ‍$31 billion in U.S. aid since 1949.Under President⁣ Joe Biden, this aid has ⁤been formalized through agreements set to continue untill 2029. The geopolitical context of the meeting is ⁣important, as both ‍nations navigate challenges from the ongoing Israel-hamas conflict and its implications for regional stability.

Trump’s recent⁤ comments about relocating Palestinians have drawn backlash⁢ from both regional and domestic entities, heightening the stakes for the meeting with Abdullah. Analysts ⁤suggest that‌ the outcome of the meeting will ⁢depend largely on how Trump approaches his controversial statements regarding⁤ Gaza and Palestinian resettlement. The meeting is seen as critical amid rising tensions concerning ceasefire negotiations and hostage releases between Israel and Hamas, with repercussions for both U.S.domestic politics and Middle Eastern dynamics.

Trump braces for ‘awkward’ meeting with Jordan’s king after offer to ‘own’ Gaza

One week after President Donald Trump shocked the world and announced that the United States should “own” Gaza, the president has a high-stakes White House meeting with King Abdullah II bin al Hussein of Jordan, a crucial American ally in the Middle East, as the Israel–Hamas war risks reescalating.

Jordan has denounced Trump’s proposal to approach Gaza as a real estate project, developing it into what the president described as the “Riviera of the Middle East” and permanently relocating Palestinians to countries such as Abdullah’s kingdom.
