Canada and Mexico were exempted from similar tariffs during the president&rsquo;s first administration, but duties on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">European Union<\/a> were not lifted until former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Joe Biden <\/a>entered office.<\/p>\n<p>Trump views tariffs as &ldquo;beautiful,&rdquo; using them to protect U.S. jobs and raise revenue, though critics contend they also raise consumer prices.<\/p>\n<p>Monday&rsquo;s steel and aluminum tariffs precede a separate announcement later this week regarding reciprocal duties, which Trump previewed last week during his press conference with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Japanese<\/a> Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The president&rsquo;s talked about reciprocal tariffs since I first met him in 2017,&rdquo; Hassert told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. &ldquo;He thinks that it&rsquo;s not fair that we have trading partners that charge tariffs two or three times what we charge.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, during an interview with CNBC, Hassert cited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">India<\/a> as an example of an ally and trading partner with &ldquo;enormously high&rdquo; tariffs compared to the U.S. Indian Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/narendra-modi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Narendra Modi<\/a> is scheduled to be at the White House on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>After Trump&rsquo;s announcement on Sunday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who is seeking reelection, took to social media to excoriate the president and predicted more &ldquo;chaos&rdquo; over the &ldquo;next four years.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Shifting goalposts and constant chaos, putting our economy at risk,&rdquo; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario has been running ads, including during Sunday&rsquo;s Super Bowl, promoting the province as a U.S. &ldquo;ally to the north.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is the next four years.
