The pro-immigration group received roughly $5 million in government grants and $7 million in government contracts between July 2022 and June 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/nonprofits\/organizations\/521372972\/202421909349300602\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according <\/a>to its most recent tax disclosures.<\/p>\n<p>Tax filings from prior years show that CASA has long relied on millions of dollars in government funding to keep its programs running. In a review of federal spending records, the <em>Washington Examiner <\/em>identified grants from the Departments of Education, Housing and Urban Development, Labor, Justice, Health and Human Services, and Homeland Security funding a variety of programs offered by CASA.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the grants to CASA are even ongoing, per federal records.<\/p>\n<p>HUD, for instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/award\/ASST_NON_B-23-CP-PA-1259_8620\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">granted<\/a> CASA $1.5 million in 2023 as part of its &ldquo;economic development initiative&rdquo; program to fund a project that will stretch well into 2031. Grants offered under this program cover a &ldquo;wide variety of projects such as housing, homelessness prevention, workforce training, public facilities, parks, resilience planning and other critical infrastructure and services,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hud.gov\/program_offices\/comm_planning\/edi-grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according<\/a> to the agency&rsquo;s website.<\/p>\n<p>CASA provides services such as those to <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtoncitypaper.com\/article\/230475\/montgomery-county-is-no-longer-a-haven-for-immigrants-and\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">both<\/a> legal and illegal migrants.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the grant from HUD, CASA has roughly $2 million worth of ongoing grants from HHS, DOL, and DHS.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Migrants walk through Tapachula, Chiapas state, Mexico in an attempt to reach the U.S. border on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025. Clemente)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The future of grants such as these remains unclear, as the Trump administration has prioritized reining in federal spending, especially on items that could fall under the banner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/dei\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"diversity, equity, and inclusion\">diversity, equity, and inclusion<\/a>. The Trump administration initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3303528\/federal-judge-temporarily-halts-trump-federal-aid-freeze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"diversity, equity, and inclusion\">froze<\/a> all federal grantmaking, though it has since been forced to back down by a federal judge pending litigation.<\/p>\n<p>CASA, however, continued to receive grant funding under the first Trump administration while involved in lawsuits against the federal government. The DOJ, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/award\/ASST_NON_U215P120136_9100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">allocated<\/a> about $850,000 to the organization to assist with its Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation program in October 2017. While receiving funds from the first Trump administration, CASA was <a href=\"https:\/\/wearecasa.org\/federal-court-blocks-trump-anti-immigrant-census-order-challenged-by-casa-others\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">involved<\/a> with legal efforts to block a citizenship question from appearing on the 2020 U.S. Census questionnaire.<\/p>\n<p>Other major grants allocated to CASA included $3 million from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/award\/ASST_NON_U411C130113_9100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Education Department<\/a> between 2014 and 2017 to <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1TOqm6sXbntq0dXbrxfBpYH3dvYvR9yfMa5G0vLqLYnE\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">develop <\/a>new programs or expand existing ones aimed at boosting student performance, $740,000 from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/award\/ASST_NON_AGOACOGP2340108_2700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Federal Communications Commission<\/a>, and just over $1 million from the DOL between 2010 and 2023 to provide health and safety training to workers with low English proficiency.<\/p>\n<p>CASA&rsquo;s unaudited fiscal 2024 financial statement <a href=\"https:\/\/wearecasa.org\/2024-annual-report\/2024-financials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">recorded<\/a> $8.2 million in government awards, accounting for over one-third of its total revenue.
