The \u200cschool board\u200b voted to keep the book available and \u200cdenied a motion that would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sen-rand-paul-offers-dr-rachel-levine-as-example-of-radical-agenda-riding-bidens-coattails\/\" title=\"Sen. Rand Paul Offers Dr. Rachel Levine As Example Of Radical Agenda Riding Biden\u2019s Coattails\">require parental consent<\/a> for \u2062students to access it. Critics, including Micah Clark from \u2064the Indiana American Family Association, argue that such decisions undermine parental authority and expose children to inappropriate content. \u200b <\/p>\n<p>Recently introduced House Bill 1195 aims to prevent schools\u200b from\u200b overruling parental concerns over material deemed obscene, but it has not \u2064yet been scheduled for discussion in the \u2064legislature. Advocates for\u2063 the bill, including Cindi Hajicek of Purple for Parents \u2063United, argue that schools are already violating \u200dexisting laws \u200cagainst making obscene materials available to minors. Meanwhile, Indiana&#8217;s educational performance \u200dhas suffered, with less than 35% of fourth and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">eighth graders performing proficiently<\/a> in reading, raising further concerns\u200c about the state&#8217;s educational priorities.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Conservative Indiana lawmakers want to pass a bill banning sexually explicit material in school classrooms after another district approved a pornographic book in the face of parents&rsquo; objections.<\/p>\n<p>In September, the board for the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) in Columbus, Indiana (located between Indianapolis and Louisville), voted to approve a book titled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Push\/dp\/1784877492?gQT=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Push<\/a><\/em>  by Sapphire, despite protests from parents concerned about graphic text. One board member read passages from the book at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UjfSCWqdLhE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meeting<\/a> where they passed a measure that bars parents from keeping the title out of children&rsquo;s hands.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Just me trying to go through this right now makes me almost want to throw up,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>WOW. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bcscschools?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@bcscschools<\/a> school board in Indiana voted to APPROVE the p*rn*graphic book &#8220;Push&#8221; while also voting AGAINST requiring parental consent to distribute it to students.<\/p>\n<p>This vote came right after one of the board members read one of the many s*xually explicit sections of the&hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PGWEleJj5Z\">pic.twitter.com\/PGWEleJj5Z<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&mdash; Libs of TikTok (@libsoftiktok) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/libsoftiktok\/status\/1887270276745871408?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 5, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The school board, however, denied a motion to require parental consent for children to access the book and approved another to keep the title on the school library shelves.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;After reviewing this matter, the Board concludes that <em>Push<\/em> by Sapphire is not &lsquo;obscene&rsquo; or &lsquo;harmful to minors&rsquo; as the terms are defined in Indiana Code,&rdquo; a conclusion from the meeting reads. &ldquo;The decision of the evaluation committee is upheld and the book may remain on the shelves of the Columbus East High School Media Center.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Micah Clark, the head of the Indiana American Family Association, told The Federalist that parents are routinely &ldquo;shocked&rdquo; by the graphic content distributed to students in schools.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If a parent can&rsquo;t control what a child reads,&rdquo; Clark said, &ldquo;that is a dereliction of duty on the school board&rsquo;s part.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A new bill proposed in the Indiana legislature last month would have prohibited the school board from overruling parents. In January, a trio of lawmakers proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/iga.in.gov\/legislative\/2025\/bills\/house\/1195\/details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House Bill 1195<\/a>, which requires schools to adopt a policy barring the availability of obscene content to students. The bill, however, has yet to be scheduled for a hearing by the House Education Committee chaired by GOP Rep. Robert Behning. Clark told The Federalist, however, the committee chairman &ldquo;doesn&rsquo;t seem to want to hear the bill.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He tends to deal with education issues the establishment or the educational system wants,&rdquo; Clark said. &ldquo;He doesn&rsquo;t seem to like these kinds of social issues.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Behning did not respond to multiple inquiries from The Federalist on Friday. <\/p>\n<p>Cindi Hajicek, the executive director for an Indiana children&rsquo;s advocacy group called Purple for Parents United, told The Federalist that the board for the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) was already breaking incumbent laws.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If we followed the letter of the law, we don&rsquo;t need any other laws,&rdquo; she said, pointing to a piece of <a href=\"https:\/\/iga.in.gov\/pdf-documents\/123\/2023\/house\/bills\/HB1447\/HB1447.04.ENRS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legislation<\/a> passed in 2023 banning schools from &ldquo;mak[ing] available&rdquo; &ldquo;obscene matter.&rdquo; She explained that school boards, however, have made a habit of evading the law by denying the obscenity of objectionable material.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They just simply put out a statement that it does not meet the statutory requirements for obscenity or harmful matter,&rdquo; she said. <\/p>\n<p>Hajicek emphasized that her group still supports the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/veteran-nurse-slams-virginia-bill-to-force-nurses-into-implicit-bias-training\/\" title=\"Nurse criticizes Virginia ... mandating implicit bias training\">latest bill proposed<\/a> by lawmakers on the topic &ldquo;because it clarifies the definition of porn for the average person.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In a perfect world our existing laws would be sufficient,&rdquo; she told The Federalist. <\/p>\n<p>Indiana students are meanwhile struggling in the classroom more than four years after coronavirus lockdowns closed the schools for prolonged periods. Less than 35 percent of fourth and eighth graders were proficient in reading, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfyi.org\/news\/articles\/indiana-naep-math-reading-scores-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to the latest National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores.
