But ever since 2015, when now-President Donald Trump announced his first campaign &mdash; and even earlier &mdash; they have spewed <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/09\/the-entire-propaganda-press-is-as-fake-as-david-muirs-fireman-costume\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lie after lie<\/a> in an attempt to control the political narrative.<\/p>\n<p>While many media outlets that take federal funding may do so in the form of subscription services to federal agencies, their financial ties to the government show how much they really stand to gain from operating as a propaganda arm. But it began an upward trend in 2014 and reached a climax of $6.4 million in 2020. Since then, federal funding to The AP has gone down, but the outlet still received $1.7 million in 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The AP issues a stylebook that journalists have widely adopted for standards in style, formatting, and word choice. According to InfluenceWatch, the stylebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.influencewatch.org\/non-profit\/associated-press-ap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shifted<\/a> in 2013 &mdash; just before The AP&rsquo;s federal funding began to trend upward &mdash; to favor left-wing terminology. The problem has <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/04\/16\/associated-press-stylebook-a-growing-mouthpiece-for-leftist-manipulation-of-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worsened<\/a> in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/recipient\/7d4ac83c-018d-ab86-fbae-b9d399f8a4c2-C\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spent<\/a> more than 52 percent &mdash; or $19.85 million &mdash; of the money it sent to The AP on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acquisition.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/manual\/PSC%20Manual%20April%202024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">category<\/a> of &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">photo\/map\/print\/publication &#038;ndash<\/a>; other,&rdquo; while 20 percent went toward &ldquo;Support &ndash; Professional: Communications.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Online access to the AP Stylebook and Merriam-Webster for a group of up to 5,000 employees &mdash; The AP&rsquo;s highest public pricing bracket &mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/store.stylebooks.com\/compare-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">costs<\/a> more than $135,800 for the first year and more than $108,600 every year after.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The top contributing federal agencies include the Agency for Global Media (which provided more than 76 percent of the AP&rsquo;s total federal funding), the Department of State, and the Department of Education. The Agency For Global Media &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usagm.gov\/our-work\/media-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trains<\/a> hundreds of journalists, editors, broadcasters and media managers each year under its authority to support freedom of information around the world&rdquo; to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usagm.gov\/who-we-are\/mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">further<\/a> &ldquo;freedom and democracy.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Agency for Global Media&rsquo;s contracts office gave The AP a single award of nearly $20 million in 2017, according to public grant data. <\/p>\n<h3><em>Politico<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Politico has received <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Liz_Wheeler\/status\/1887173667504947433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$34.3 million<\/a> from the federal government since 2015, according to government spending data published by Liz Wheeler.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1887172936924385705\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spent<\/a> more than $517,000 on a &ldquo;Politico Pro subscription for 37 users.&rdquo; Elon Musk, who is heading up Trump&rsquo;s efforts with the Department of Government Efficiency, said, &ldquo;This wasteful expenditure will be deleted.&rdquo; As The Washington Free Beacon <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/trump-administration\/musk-vows-to-eliminate-wasteful-politico-subscriptions-for-federal-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, an annual subscription to the service costs $12,000 to $15,000 &mdash; for just three users, and the majority of awards to Politico appear to be for Pro subscriptions.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Great point from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Liz_Wheeler?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Liz_Wheeler<\/a>: if Politico subscriptions are $10K that&rsquo;s not a subscription that&rsquo;s patronage. The same day, the outlet paid its employees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/white-house-announces-doge-canceling-payments-politico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">late<\/a>, clearing payments that would have normally arrived on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>Its top agency contributors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/recipient\/fa0cefae-7cfb-881d-29c3-1bd39cc6a49e-P\/latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">include<\/a> the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education, and its top subagency contributors include the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>The publication&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/26\/axel-springer-to-buy-politico.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">former<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/29\/business\/media\/politico-robert-allbritton.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">parent company<\/a>, the Capitol News Company, also took more than $3.8 million total in federal government payments &mdash; peaking at $710,044 in 2015 &mdash; which, again, is the same year Trump announced his first presidential campaign. Federal funding for Politico&rsquo;s parent company began to taper off in 2020, the year before the outlet was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/26\/axel-springer-to-buy-politico.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sold<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Reuters<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Reuters has received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/recipient\/1bb52c97-07b0-181e-01e2-18846b8961b1-C\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$10.6 million<\/a> from federal agencies starting in 2020, according to government grant data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Federalist analyzed contributions to &ldquo;Reuters News &amp; Media Inc.&rdquo; The federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/recipient\/7d4ac83c-018d-ab86-fbae-b9d399f8a4c2-C\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spent<\/a> more than 89 percent &mdash; or $9.45 million &mdash; of the money allocated to Reuters News &amp; Media on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acquisition.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/manual\/PSC%20Manual%20April%202024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">category<\/a> of &ldquo;Support &ndash; Professional: Communications.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The outlet&rsquo;s top contributing agencies include the aforementioned Agency For Global Media, which contributed more than 89 percent of the publication&rsquo;s federal funding, and the Department of State.<\/p>\n<h3><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The New York Times has received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/recipient\/f05659be-52e5-38ef-4618-659c2038b7bb-P\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$2.7 million<\/a> total from federal agencies since 2008, according to government spending data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/lawrence-w-reed-a-president-who-warned-americans-what-extravagant-federal-spending-would-do-to-character\/\" title=\"Lawrence W. Reed: A President Who Warned Americans What Extravagant Federal ... Would Do to Character\">federal government spent half<\/a> of that amount on &ldquo;newspapers and periodicals.&rdquo; It spent another 11 percent on &ldquo;web-based subscription[s].&rdquo; The paper&rsquo;s group subscription prices are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/subscription\/groups?Pardot_Campaign_Code_Form_Input=8L8KW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not public<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Federal money to The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/recipient\/f05659be-52e5-38ef-4618-659c2038b7bb-C\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">varied<\/a> from as little as $25,000 a year to $177,000 per year until 2022, when it skyrocketed to nearly $400,000. Annual federal funding for the paper remained near that level through 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The top funding agencies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/recipient\/f05659be-52e5-38ef-4618-659c2038b7bb-C\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">include<\/a> the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice, and the Department of State, and the top subagencies include the Air Force and the Securities and Exchange Commission.<\/p>\n<h3><em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The Washington Post has accepted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/recipient\/f1ed16e9-43dc-9c33-c56d-92448fa91d4b-C\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$1.7 million<\/a> from federal agencies starting in 2014, according to public data.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government spent more than 61 percent &mdash; or $1.03 million &mdash; of its money to The Washington Post on &ldquo;support-management: advertising.&rdquo; Its second-highest area of spending on the paper was &ldquo;newspapers and periodicals,&rdquo; at more than 25 percent &mdash; or $425,918.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/helpcenter.washingtonpost.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/115000443968-Compare-subscription-packages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">does not<\/a> publish the price of its group subscription, otherwise known as an &ldquo;Enterprise Subscription.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The paper received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/recipient\/f1ed16e9-43dc-9c33-c56d-92448fa91d4b-C\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most annual<\/a> federal funding &mdash; $305,000 &mdash; in 2015. The number has since generally gone down, though the paper has accepted more than $66,000 so far in 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post&rsquo;s top contributor agencies include the Department of Defense &mdash; which has provided nearly 60 percent of its federal funding &mdash; and the Department of Health and Human Services, while the top subagencies include the Navy, the Army, and the National Institutes of Health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><em>CNN<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>CNN has received nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/recipient\/35d70c26-2eb7-c660-6b43-b6cefed5434c-C\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$220,000<\/a> from the federal government, according to government grant disclosures. The outlet apparently only took the funding in 2015 and 2016 &mdash; during&nbsp; Trump&rsquo;s first presidential campaign, in which CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/10\/13\/politics\/donald-trump-allegations-fallout\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">viciously smeared<\/a> the now-president. The outlet has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/10\/politics\/trump-sentencing-embarrassment-analysis\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">maintained<\/a> this approach.<\/p>\n<h2>Manipulating Public Opinion<\/h2>\n<p>Soon after Trump began his first term, outlets like The New York Times amplified and advanced the &ldquo;Russiagate&rdquo; collusion narrative, which turned out to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/10\/22\/fbi-raid-on-oleg-deripaska-is-bad-for-russia-collusion-hoaxers-not-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hoax<\/a>. Its website still features a section on &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/spotlight\/trump-russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trump and the Russians<\/a>,&rdquo; filled with hit pieces from 2017. In fact, all six outlets that have taken federal funding &mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ec2324187dcd4837abb578fb91d7eeac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The AP<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/trump-russia-scandal\/48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Politico<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/world\/despite-report-findings-almost-half-of-americans-think-trump-colluded-with-russ-idUSKCN1R72SJ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reuters<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/spotlight\/trump-russia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/global-opinions\/wp\/2017\/09\/08\/the-case-for-trump-russia-collusion-were-getting-very-very-close\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/trump-russia-ties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNN<\/a> &mdash; amplified this narrative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But it later turned out that the dossier of former British spy Christopher Steele &mdash; the impetus for many of these conspiracy theories, as well as the FBI&rsquo;s spying on the Trump campaign &mdash; was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/01\/02\/new-documents-suggest-steele-dossier-deliberate-setup-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fabricated<\/a>, as The Federalist previously reported. And even more concerning, Hillary Clinton&rsquo;s 2016 campaign paid for it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Still, these outlets served as anti-Trump megaphones through his entire first term. In the crucial days before the 2020 election, CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/10\/18\/media\/new-york-post-hunter-biden-reliable\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dismissed<\/a> the New York Post&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/30\/us-news\/fbi-tried-to-minimize-hunter-biden-laptop-bombshell-days-before-scoop-as-facebook-exec-warned-against-offending-dems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">story<\/a> exposing the contents of Hunter Biden&rsquo;s laptop, and Politico editors allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/23\/us-news\/ex-politico-reporters-reveal-cowardly-editors-buried-bombshell-hunter-biden-laptop-stories-other-scoops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">buried<\/a> the story at the time, designating it &ldquo;disinformation.&rdquo; It turned out the Hunter Biden laptop story was true, and as revealed in the Twitter Files, Democrats and federal officials worked with Big Tech to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/twitter-files\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suppress<\/a> it. A poll found 80 percent of respondents thought the story would have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/118\/meeting\/house\/116258\/documents\/HHRG-118-FD00-20230720-SD011.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">changed<\/a> the outcome of the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to July 13, 2024, when a would-be assassin shot Trump in the side of the head in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump dropped to the ground, clutching his ear &mdash; but got back up, raising his fist and yelling, &ldquo;Fight, fight, fight!&rdquo; while blood streamed down the side of his face. Corporate media seemingly moved quickly to try to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/13\/early-media-reports-call-trump-bleeding-after-he-was-shot-an-incident\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dismiss<\/a> the events &mdash;  with CNN claiming Trump&rsquo;s rally was simply &ldquo;interrupted by Secret Service&rdquo; and The Washington Post claiming Trump was simply &ldquo;taken away after loud noises at rally.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/contested-election-how-a-close-race-with-dueling-polls-creates-risk-of-surprises-delays-and-doubts-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"Contested election: How a close race with dueling polls creates risk of surprises, delays, and doubts - Washington Examiner\">multiple failed assassination attempts<\/a> on Trump&rsquo;s life, legacy media outlets have <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/07\/19\/leftists-continue-eliminationist-rhetoric-days-after-trump-assassination-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">continued<\/a> to demonize the now-president. MSNBC <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/10\/28\/corporate-media-incite-further-violence-by-calling-joyful-trump-rally-nazi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suggested<\/a> his New York City rally in Madison Square Garden was similar to a &ldquo;Nazi&rdquo; rally, Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/10\/27\/trumps-madison-square-garden-racist-00185770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> it featured &ldquo;racist and vulgar remarks,&rdquo; and The New York Times called it a &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/27\/us\/trump-msg-rally.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">carnival<\/a> of grievances, misogyny, and racism.&rdquo; PBS &mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/support\/frequently-asked-questions-about-support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funded<\/a> by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, to which Congress allocated <a href=\"https:\/\/cpb.org\/aboutcpb\/financials\/budget\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$535 million<\/a> in the 2025 budget &mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/20\/after-elon-musk-raises-his-hand-from-his-heart-pbs-labels-him-fascist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compared<\/a> Elon Musk&rsquo;s gesture to the crowd at a post-inauguration rally to a &ldquo;fascist salute.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Federalist&rsquo;s CEO Sean Davis explained the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/seanmdav\/status\/1887208092586152164\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conflict of interest<\/a> in federally-funded legacy media coverage, pointing out Politico as an example.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was Politico that maneuvered to have the Hunter laptop story banned and everyone discussing it censored.
