Now, barriers are being erected to deter criminal activity along the U.S.-Mexico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/border\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">border<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p>Federal officials put up World War II-style metal barriers on Wednesday along the border in New Mexico, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borderreport.com\/immigration\/normandy-style-barriers-placed-on-mount-cristo-rey\/?utm_campaign=socialflow&amp;utm_source=t.co&amp;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a>. The structures resemble the metal &ldquo;X-like&rdquo; anti-tank obstacles known as Panzersperre or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wearethemighty.com\/mighty-history\/those-metal-things-normandy-beaches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Czech hedgehogs<\/a> that were positioned along the beaches of Normandy during D-Day. Cristo Rey area provide a prime location for Transnational Criminal Organization to exploit and smuggle groups,&rdquo; CBP said in a release.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The hazardous terrain of Mt. Cristo Rey and its surrounding area continues to be exploited by Transnational Criminal Organizations,&rdquo; Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. Chavez previously <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/local-media-release\/border-patrol-agents-continue-disrupting-mt-cristo-rey-smuggling\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. &ldquo;The limited visibility during the hours of darkness and the steep terrain increases the risk of injuries for migrants exploited by smugglers that have complete disregard for human safety.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In October 2024, Border Patrol <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/tx\/south-texas-el-paso\/news\/2024\/10\/15\/migrant-deaths-in-new-mexico-have-increased-tenfold\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> it encountered approximately 1,000 illegal migrants trying to enter the country near the U.S. border in New Mexico and western Texas during the last 12 months. This was a significant increase from the previous year. There were also multiple <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.borderreport.com\/immigration\/border-crime\/assaults-on-border-patrol-agents-on-the-rise-in-new-mexico\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a> of border patrol agents being attacked in this area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\"><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Landon Hutchens told <em>Border Report <\/em>that the World War II-type barriers are a &ldquo;temporary&rdquo; structure.
