These inquiries \u200cwere \u2064prompted\u2064 by <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">media reports detailing cases<\/a> of U.S. citizens, including individuals on Native American reservations and a family in Milwaukee who were detained while speaking Spanish. Raskin and Jayapal sent a letter to \u200bthe heads\u2062 of ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requesting more information on these incidents, and they emphasized the serious \u2062implications of such detentions \u2062on citizens&#8217; rights.<\/p>\n<p>In response\u2063 to these concerns, Jayapal, along with Sen. Alex \u200cPadilla, introduced the Access \u2064to Counsel Act, designed to guarantee that detained U.S. citizens or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/illinois-gov-pritzker-says-ron-desantis-isnt-smart-enough-to-be-president\/\" title=\"Pritzker: DeSantis lacks intelligence for presidency.\">legal permanent\u2062 residents<\/a> can consult with an attorney or relevant parties if detained \u200bfor more than an hour at the border. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), ranking member of the Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, announced Wednesday their effort to uncover facts following media reports that U.S. children and adults had been caught up in ICE arrests recently.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We write to request more information about troubling reports that U.S. citizens have been detained during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fewer-than-30k-illegals-were-deported-in-2022\/\" title=\"In 2022, fewer than 30k illegals were deported\">immigration enforcement operations<\/a>,&rdquo; Raskin and Jayapal wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/democrats-judiciary.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/2025-02-04_raskin_jayapal_to_noem_dhs_vitello_ice.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">letter<\/a> to the heads of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These reports raise serious questions about the actions of Department of Homeland<br \/>Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel when conducting<br \/>immigration enforcement,&rdquo; the lawmakers continued.<\/p>\n<p>NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/trump-immigration-raids-citizens-profiling-accusations-native-american-rcna189203\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">reported<\/a> last week about multiple incidents in which U.S. citizens on Native American reservations were detained by ICE agents while they moved in to arrest one or more illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>In another case, a child, mother, and grandmother in Milwaukee were detained and transported to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ariz-gov-ducey-urges-biden-admin-to-declare-crisis-at-southern-border\/\" title=\"Ariz. Gov. Ducey urges Biden admin. to declare crisis at southern ...\">immigration detention center<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/us-citizens-reportedly-detained-after-being-overheard-speaking-spanish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according to<\/a> Telemundo Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p>Raskin and Jayapal asked that the DHS and ICE share further details about the wrongful detainments by Feb. 18, two weeks from the day the letter was sent.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Jayapal and Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/law-allowing-noncitizens-to-vote-in-dc-elections-survives-congress\/\" title=\"Law allowing non... to vote in DC elections survives Congress\">jointly introduced legislation<\/a> to ensure that any U.S. citizen or person with legal permanent status can speak with an attorney, relative, or other interested party if detained by federal police at the border.<\/p>\n<p>The Access to Counsel Act would ensure that people detained by Customs and Border Protection agents for more than an hour would be entitled to speak with an outside party.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is more important now than ever, under a second Trump Administration, that we codify the right to access counsel for detained persons who are legally allowed access to the United States,&rdquo; Jayapal said in a statement. &ldquo;As we continue to see him scapegoat immigrants, we must protect people from unjust detention.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Jayapal bill was originally put forward in 2017 following the ban that the Trump administration imposed on admitting citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries, which Democrats dubbed the &ldquo;Muslim ban.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration justified the temporary ban on admitting travelers by citing insufficient screening and vetting of international travelers by their home countries.<\/p>\n<p>The DHS did not respond to a request for comment.
