They aim to defund Planned Parenthood, reinstate safeguards on abortion\u200c pills, and challenge free-speech buffer \u2063zones around abortion\u2064 clinics. Pro-life\u200b leaders are optimistic about winning legal cases that coudl \u2062restore protections for the unborn\u2062 and cut \u2064financial support to abortion providers.<\/p>\n<p>Key legal battles \u200cinclude\u200b the case of *40 Days for Life v. \u2063County of Westchester*, where \u200cthey successfully challenged a buffer zone limiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/americans-remember-the-48th-annual-march-for-life\/\" title=\"Americans remember the 48th annual March for ...\">pro-life advocates<\/a>&#8216; speech. Similar cases are being considered \u2064that could overturn restrictions on speech around \u2064abortion facilities nationwide. The ILJ is \u2064also\u2062 representing\u2064 Mark Houck in a lawsuit\u2062 against law enforcement\u200b for his alleged wrongful arrest in a pro-life context and\u2063 has filed \u2062complaints against Planned Parenthood for violating \u200delectioneering laws.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally,\u200c the \u200dSupreme\u2062 Court is \u2064deliberating critically important issues\u200c such as whether medicaid can fund Planned\u200c Parenthood and tackling the issue of &#8220;abortion tourism&#8221;\u2064 that\u2064 arises from state-to-state\u2064 legal\u2062 discrepancies following the\u2063 *Dobbs v.Jackson Women&#8217;s Health organization* ruling. This ruling \u200dhas led to a reshaping of abortion\u2062 laws \u200bacross the\u200c states, with many states instituting bans or strict limitations on the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Proponents of the pro-life movement are advocating for defunding Planned Parenthood,\u200c citing significant taxpayer funding received during\u2062 the Biden governance. They argue that\u200c this funding could be better \u200bredirected to community health centers that provide \u200dcomplete care to women.<\/p>\n<p>the pro-life movement is set for a pivotal year in its advocacy efforts, focusing on legal battles, state-level actions, and grassroots efforts to promote alternatives to abortion.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>This year, pro-life organizations across the country are poised to fight abortion by defunding Planned Parenthood, restoring necessary safeguards on the abortion pill, challenging free-speech buffer zones, and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pro-life leaders are confident several major cases will win back legal protections for the unborn and cut funding to abortion providers this year.<\/p>\n<p>The largest grassroots pro-life organization in the world, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.40daysforlife.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">40 Days for Life<\/a>, stood up an enhanced legal arm, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.40daysforlife.com\/en\/institute-of-law-and-justice.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute of Law and Justice<\/a> (ILJ), in Aug. 2023 to address increasing aggression against pro-lifers. To date, the ILJ has lost no cases and is taking one to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Major cases include<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.40daysforlife.com\/en\/westchester-county-retreats-40-days-for-lifes-legal-stand-forces-backpedal-on-buffer-zones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>40 Days for Life v. County of Westchester<\/em><\/a>, a suit against Westchester County, New York, to repeal its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/westchester-new-york-scrambles-to-update-abortion-clinic-law-afraid-of-the-supreme-court\/\" title=\"Westchester, NY rushes to revise ... clinic ... amid Supreme Court fears.\">100-foot buffer zone<\/a> against pro-life advocates&rsquo; freedom of speech. The county repealed its unlawful ordinance in the face of 40 Days for Life&rsquo;s lawsuit, knowing that the Supreme Court would end buffer zones nationwide; but 40 Days for Life is advancing the case against the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">remaining unlawful ordinances attacking free speech<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Westchester case is one of several challenging buffer zones across the states and going before the Supreme Court; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/case-files\/cases\/turco-v-city-of-englewood-new-jersey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Turco v. City of Englewood, New Jersey<\/em><\/a>  and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/case-files\/cases\/coalition-life-v-city-of-carbondale-illinois\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Coalition Life v. City of Carbondale, Illinois<\/em><\/a>  seek to overturn limits on freedom of speech around abortion centers.<\/p>\n<p>The organization is also representing pro-life advocate <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/11\/persecuted-pro-life-activist-files-4-3-million-lawsuit-against-doj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark Houck and his family in a suit against the Department of Justice and Pennsylvania state and local law enforcement<\/a> for forcibly raiding Houck&rsquo;s home and arresting him on false charges in September 2022.<\/p>\n<p>In a third case, ILJ has filed two complaints against Planned Parenthood for electioneering, in direct violation of federal laws governing unlawful political activities by tax exempt entities. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Two Missouri Planned Parenthoods provided and advertised direct support to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago; and the Sarasota Planned Parenthood allowed its facilities to be used for multi-day electioneering efforts for the Harris campaign, setting up phone banks and placing Harris\/Walz signs on the building,&rdquo; according to Matt Britton, ILJ board member ex-officio and general counsel.<\/p>\n<h2>Other Cases before the Supreme Court<\/h2>\n<p>The Supreme Court is also currently considering whether Medicaid dollars can fund Planned Parenthood in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/case-files\/cases\/medina-v-planned-parenthood-south-atlantic-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic<\/em><\/a>, a South Carolina case that could redirect these funds towards real health care for women.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion tourism, a problem arising from state variability in legal abortion since <a href=\"https:\/\/adflegal.org\/case\/dobbs-v-jackson-womens-health-organization\/?msclkid=876d107551ee18ec046c77f85aa7f09c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Dobbs<\/em><\/a>  overturned <em>Roe<\/em>, will also be addressed in the courts this year in the cases <a href=\"https:\/\/law.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/appellate-courts\/ca9\/23-3787\/23-3787-2024-12-02.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Matsumoto v. Labrado<\/em><\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/law.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/appellate-courts\/ca9\/23-3787\/23-3787-2024-12-02.html\">r<\/a> <\/em>and <a href=\"https:\/\/dockets.justia.com\/docket\/tennessee\/tnmdce\/3:2024cv00768\/99986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Welty v. Dunaway<\/em><\/a>. This could impact the trafficking of pregnant minors across state lines with parental permission or involvement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>State Action<\/h2>\n<p>Following <em>Dobbs, <\/em>major changes at the state level reshaped abortion law in America. Twelve states have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/womens-health-policy\/dashboard\/abortion-in-the-u-s-dashboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">banned<\/a> abortion, and six more limit the procedure to under 6-12 weeks gestation. The abortion industry&rsquo;s response was to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into ballot initiatives and deceptive messaging, but it was insufficient to convince Americans, said Bradley Kehr, Americans United for Life government affairs director.<\/p>\n<p>States have already taken up the challenge of protecting against the harms of chemical abortion, as seen in Louisiana last year, and Kehr is hopeful more will do the same in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Finally, states are promoting the good work of pregnancy care centers,&rdquo; Kehr said. &ldquo;This includes recognition and different channels of funding. AUL believes this is critical to ensuring expectant mothers get the prenatal, delivery, and post-natal care they and their families need.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Defund Planned Parenthood<\/h2>\n<p>Defunding Planned Parenthood should be the resounding call of all pro-life advocates in 2025, according to Shawn Carney, 40 Days for Life president and CEO. &ldquo;As Planned Parenthood goes, so goes the abortion industry in our country.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The abortion behemoth received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2024\/11\/22\/exclusive-gop-lawmakers-demand-accountability-federal-funding-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$750 million<\/a> in taxpayer dollars during the Biden administration, accounting for a third of its massive budget.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;According to their own reports, true medical services constitute a negligible portion of their operations,&rdquo; Kehr said of Planned Parenthood. &ldquo;By redirecting this funding to community health centers, federal action can be taken to ensure that these resources are utilized effectively.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Trump Effect<\/h2>\n<p>The first presidential election since the overturning of <em>Roe<\/em> was an epic failure for abortion advocates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Kamala ran on abortion &hellip; and wasn&rsquo;t going to apologize and that really backfired,&rdquo; Carney said. &ldquo;You really saw that with the Catholic vote.&rdquo; Trump won the Catholic vote by&nbsp;9 percent in 2024, compared to 1 percent in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Promising to defund Planned Parenthood was a Trump initiative in 2017, and Vice President J.D. Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., have both publicized this as a priority. Americans must remain vocal and hold elected officials accountable, Carney said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The pro-life movement is one of the few movements [Trump] listened to in his first term,&rdquo; Carney said. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t think he did anything we didn&rsquo;t want him to do.&rdquo; If Elon Musk is going to cut government spending, Planned Parenthood is &ldquo;low-hanging fruit,&rdquo; Carney added.<\/p>\n<h2>Chemical Abortion<\/h2>\n<p>The FDA&rsquo;s removal of <a href=\"https:\/\/aul.org\/2023\/04\/18\/147-members-of-congress-urge-supreme-court-to-keep-health-and-safety-safeguards-for-abortion-drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safeguards<\/a> for chemical abortion pills remains a thorn in the side of pro-lifers, as the number of chemical abortions hits record highs. The Trump administration should reinstate basic, commonsense regulations, Kehr said.<\/p>\n<p>The most important grassroots effort is the presence outside of Planned Parenthood facilities, offering alternatives to abortion, Carney said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Life advocates should continue to pray, march for life at the local or national level, petition Congress to defund Planned Parenthood, peacefully protest abortion centers, and support local pregnancy centers, Carney said. &ldquo;These are the <a href=\"https:\/\/defundplannedparenthood.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five things we need to do in the first 100 days of 2025<\/a>.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Ashley Bateman is a policy writer for The Heartland Institute and blogger for Ascension Press.
