Leavitt was responding to President Trump’s claims that the lowering of air traffic controller standards under the Obama and Biden administrations could have contributed to the accident. She referred to a 2015 lawsuit⁢ alleging the FAA⁢ implemented DEI policies that favored applicants based on race ⁣rather than skill, which some argue compromised public safety.

Leavitt emphasized that applicants’ qualifications should be prioritized over personal attributes such as race, citing that many qualified air traffic controller candidates were overlooked due to these⁢ policies. She posed a rhetorical question, highlighting that passengers care more about⁣ the ⁢pilot’s ability than their racial background. The discussion pointed to broader‌ criticisms of how DEI initiatives might negatively impact hiring practices and public safety. Additionally, former air traffic controller Michael Pearson supported these claims, stating that the FAA’s approach has endangered safety. Both Leavitt and Trump called for a merit-based hiring system for air ⁢traffic controllers.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt took the issue of whether DEI policy at the Federal Aviation Administration had anything to do with Wednesday’s fatal airline crash to its most basic denominator while speaking to reporters on Friday.

Leavitt was being forced to defend President Donald Trump’s claim that a lowering of air traffic controller standards under the Obama and Biden administrations may have been a contributing factor in the collision of American Airlines Flight 5342 with an Army Black Hawk helicopter in Washington, D.C., near Reagan National Airport.

Leavitt referenced a known fact: that many would-be air traffic controllers sued the Department of Transportation and the FAA in 2015 regarding the decision to add a biographical questionnaire to the application process, i.e., a DEI policy requirement.

According to the Mountain States Legal Foundation, which filed the suit, “The Obama administration dropped a skill-based system for selecting and hiring air traffic controllers (ATCs), and replaced it with a new system designed to favor applicants on the basis of their race. She was defending President Donald Trump’s assertion that reduced standards for air traffic controllers under the Obama and Biden administrations might have played a role in the collision between American Airlines Flight 5342 and an Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. Leavitt pointed out that many aspiring air traffic controllers had sued the Department of Transportation and FAA in 2015 over a new requirement for a biographical questionnaire as part of their application process, which she linked to DEI policies. The Mountain States Legal Foundation, which initiated the lawsuit, claimed that “the Obama administration replaced a skill-based hiring system with one favoring applicants based on race,” calling it illegal and unconstitutional. They argued that this change compromised public safety by eliminating thousands of qualified candidates who did not meet specific demographic criteria.

Leavitt seemed to reference this lawsuit while discussing its implications under both administrations. She stated that if someone has spent years training to be an air traffic controller based solely on merit but is then required to disclose personal details irrelevant to their qualifications, it undermines morale within the industry. She posed a rhetorical question about whether passengers prioritize safety or diversity when flying: “When you are flying with your loved ones… do you pray your plane lands safely or do you pray your pilot has a certain skin color?”

Leavitt suggested these applicants were unfairly excluded from becoming air traffic controllers due to their race, labeling such discrimination as unacceptable. In her remarks, she emphasized common sense over identity politics when it comes to aviation safety.

In related commentary from former air traffic controller Michael Pearson—who represented plaintiffs in the aforementioned lawsuit—he recounted how meetings between minority advocacy groups and FAA officials led to hiring freezes and changes in recruitment practices aimed at increasing diversity rather than focusing on skills.

The Washington Times editorial board previously highlighted concerns about lowering standards for air traffic controllers due to DEI initiatives after incidents at Reagan National Airport raised alarms about safety protocols.

Pearson criticized these policies as detrimental since they began around 2010 during Obama’s presidency, asserting they directly contributed to staffing shortages leading up to recent accidents.

Both Leavitt and Trump advocate for hiring practices based solely on merit rather than demographic factors within aviation roles

[16574,32435,33457,32171,49627
post-2397717","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-dei","tag-karoline-leavitt","tag-media-analysis","tag-political-commentary","tag-wh-news-briefings
["GET
