The piece highlights a growing concern\u2063 around the rise of obesity and\u200c chronic illnesses, indicating that \u2063while pharmaceutical companies profit from treatments, they frequently enough <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">neglect essential preventive measures<\/a>.\u2064 This ongoing debate\u200b around \u2064the role of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/opioid-lawsuits-in-nyc-l-a-move-forward\/\" title=\"Opioid lawsuits in NYC, L.A. move forward\">big pharmaceutical companies<\/a> in \u2063healthcare raises questions about their commitment to truly\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cbo-reports-show-socialized-medicine-would-make-americans-poorer-and-sicker\/\" title=\"CBO Reports Show Socialized Medicine Would Make Americans Poorer And Sicker\">improving health outcomes<\/a> as opposed to \u2064maintaining a cycle of dependency on medication.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Blogger and radio host Erick Erickson penned a long, emotional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/erick-erickson-big-pharma-saved-my-life-rfk-maha?hide_intro_popup=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">column<\/a> in The Free Press on Thursday complaining that critics of the modern medical establishment built on sick care have &ldquo;scapegoated&rdquo; the pharmaceutical industry.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Big Pharma Saved My Life,&rdquo; he titled the essay, with a story of how pharmaceutical interventions have saved both Erickson and his wife after they suffered life-threatening episodes. &ldquo;We are still both here, thanks to God and the much-maligned &lsquo;Big Pharma.&#8217;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;That disparaging label got a workout from both Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his Senate interrogators during confirmation hearings this week,&rdquo; Erickson said. &ldquo;But let me tell you about the other side of this now-hackneyed phrase. Without innovative drugs developed with great scientific skill at tremendous cost by the pharmaceutical industry, my family and I would not be here today. There are countless other people who can say the same.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>His argument, however, is bad faith and ridiculous. Criticism of &ldquo;Big Pharma&rdquo; isn&rsquo;t a denial of the miracles of modern medicine that help keep us alive longer and, in some ways, healthier than ever before. Rather it is an indictment of the industry&rsquo;s exercising corrupt influence over politicians while operating with insidious incentives to engineer a model of sick care instead of genuine health care.<\/p>\n<p>The American lifespan might be extending beyond that of previous generations, but health span is certainly not, despite the innovations in medicine to increase both. Dartmouth College Professor Susan Roberts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/10\/09\/life-spans-are-growing-but-health-spans-are-shrinking.html#:~:text=The%20average%20American%20is%20living,associated%20with%20higher%20healthcare%20expenses.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> CNBC last fall Americans can now expect to spend roughly 10 years coping with myriad chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and dementia &mdash; a period that is twice as long as the duration expected in the 1960s. Roberts blamed the &ldquo;widening gap&rdquo; between life and health span on the medical industry&rsquo;s success in &ldquo;keeping sick people alive&rdquo; without solving their underlying problems. In other words, Americans are suffering an unprecedented epidemic of chronic illness as conditions managed by a pill for every ill continue to pile up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronic-disease\/data-research\/facts-stats\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According<\/a> to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 90 percent of all health care spending in the United States goes toward dealing with chronic disease and mental health issues. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronic-disease\/about\/index.html#:~:text=Six%20in%2010%20Americans%20have,inactivity%2C%20and%20excessive%20alcohol%20use.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Six in 10<\/a> Americans suffer from at least one chronic illness, while 4 in 10 suffer two or more. More than 40 percent of adults 20 and older, meanwhile, are clinically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/fastats\/obesity-overweight.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obese<\/a>, which amplifies the risk of nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-023-28920-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">every chronic illness<\/a> and at least <a href=\"https:\/\/stop.publichealth.gwu.edu\/fast-facts\/obesity-related-chronic-disease#:~:text=Obesity%20is%20the%20leading%20risk,risk%20among%20persons%20with%20obesity.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">13<\/a> different cancers. <\/p>\n<p>Naturally, pharmaceutical giants have been eager to capitalize on obesity with a new generation of weight-loss drugs sold as medicinal elixirs for Americans&rsquo; runaway weight problem, even as the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/09\/27\/ozempic-is-a-permanent-treatment-to-a-preventable-problem-that-already-has-a-cure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">synthetic injections<\/a> are just another permanent treatment for a preventable problem that already has a cure. Novo Nordisk, the Danish manufacturer of name-brand GLP-1 agonists Wegovy and Ozempic (the latter of which is sold to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/09\/arts\/music\/ozempic-jingle-oh-oh-oh-its-magic-pilot.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">parody tune<\/a> of the Pilot&rsquo;s 1975 hit, &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MzlK0OGpIRs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Magic<\/a>&ldquo;) made so much money from its supposed wonder drugs that the company is &ldquo;Reshaping Denmark&rsquo;s Economy,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/28\/business\/denmark-ozempic-wegovy.html#:~:text=While%20Denmark%20is%20no%20stranger,the%20luxury%20goods%20group%20LVMH.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to the New York Times in 2023. <\/p>\n<p>But is Novo Nordisk really interested in solving obesity as an underlying issue? Hardly. As outlined in my new book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fat-Unhappy-Positivity-Killing-Yourself\/dp\/B0DNJZLVZ5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fat and Unhappy<\/a><\/em>, the Danish company is a lead sponsor of a group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.obesityaction.org\/obesity-care-week-2024-kristal-hartman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">determined<\/a> to &ldquo;break the stigma of obesity.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.obesityaction.org\/about\/purpose\/who-we-are\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">launched<\/a> in 2005 &ldquo;with the goal that this organization could create needed change for those who are living with and\/or are affected by the disease of obesity.&rdquo; Today, the group operates with 85,000 members, some of whom pay small dues, in addition to receiving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.obesityaction.org\/corporate-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funding<\/a> from a cadre of pharmaceutical giants including Novo Nordisk, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Eli Lilly. The &ldquo;action&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.obesityaction.org\/about\/purpose\/beliefs-and-demands\/#:~:text=To%20be%20treated%20with%20dignity,as%20employment%2C%20education%20and%20more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demanded<\/a> by the OAC includes the &ldquo;elimination of weight bias in our society and laws&rdquo; based on the &ldquo;belief&rdquo; that obesity is a matter of &ldquo;disease&rdquo; out of individuals&rsquo; control rather than one of personal responsibility. <\/p>\n<p>The group&rsquo;s &ldquo;Stop Weight Bias Campaign&rdquo; has its own website and also happens to be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stopweightbias.com\/be-part-of-the-solution\/partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sponsored<\/a>&nbsp;by WW, formerly known as WeightWatchers, which is now operating as a pharmaceutical company <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6464785\/weightwatchers-prescribing-weight-loss-drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">selling<\/a> GLP-1 drugs. WW entered the market after decades of selling the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/la-oe-teicholz-calorie-count-fda-rule-20180520-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">debunked<\/a> low-fat, calories in\/calories out model for weight loss <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/well.blogs.nytimes.com\/2015\/08\/09\/coca-cola-funds-scientists-who-shift-blame-for-obesity-away-from-bad-diets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promoted<\/a> by the food industry.<\/p>\n<p>Is it scapegoating to suggest the pharmaceutical industry is not operating in consumers&rsquo; best interests? There&rsquo;s far more money to be made in chasing a treatment over a cure, and bureaucrats love to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/congress-blog\/politics\/452654-for-big-pharma-the-revolving-door-keeps-spinning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">make it<\/a> after years on top of the nation&rsquo;s most powerful regulatory agencies. One medication often leads to another medication, which then leads to another and another and another and so on. <\/p>\n<p>But we need not worry, said the drug industry 20 years ago, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/29\/health\/purdue-opioids-oxycontin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opioids<\/a> prescribed to cope with the aftermath of all our surgeries were not very addictive. And Americans struggling with a spiritual pain can just take antidepressants to drug their way out &mdash; never mind the risks that could make us even more insane than we were before. Let&rsquo;s examine the possible side effects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abilify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disclosed<\/a> by the manufacturer of the antidepressant Abilify (emphasis added):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Stroke in elderly people &hellip; that can lead to death<\/li>\n<li>Neuroleptic malignant syndrome. &hellip; <\/li>\n<li>Uncontrolled body movements. &hellip; <\/li>\n<li>Problems with your metabolism such as: High blood sugar &hellip; and diabetes. &hellip; Increased fat levels &hellip; in your blood. &hellip; Weight gain. &hellip; <\/li>\n<li><strong>Unusual urges<\/strong>. &hellip; <\/li>\n<li>Orthostatic hypotension. &hellip; <\/li>\n<li>Falls. &hellip; <\/li>\n<li>Low white blood cell count<\/li>\n<li>Seizures (convulsions)<\/li>\n<li>Problems with control of your body temperature especially when you exercise. &hellip;<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty swallowing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What are those urges? The company website lists &ldquo;gambling, binge eating or eating that you cannot control (compulsive), compulsive shopping and sexual urges.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If you or your family members notice that you are having unusual urges or behaviors, talk to your healthcare provider,&rdquo; the website reads. At least the dystopian cartoon lady in the company&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dAkXjrT_bFE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commercial<\/a> was reassuring. Before anyone says &ldquo;follow the science&rdquo; with another random pill from whatever pharma has come up with as the answer to all our problems, maybe Americans ought to try putting their phones down and going for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unisa.edu.au\/media-centre\/Releases\/2023\/exercise-more-effective-than-medicines-to-manage-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">walk<\/a> after a meal of real food from the local butcher. There is plenty of science to suggest the &ldquo;chemical imbalance&rdquo; theory of mental illness is just a massive <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/02\/16\/we-dont-have-a-mental-health-crisis-we-have-a-lifestyle-crisis\/\">sc<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/02\/16\/we-dont-have-a-mental-health-crisis-we-have-a-lifestyle-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">am<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The obvious conflict in Big Pharma&rsquo;s incentives was painfully highlighted by the coronavirus pandemic. Americans were forced into lockdowns by politicians who coerced the public into taking government-funded &ldquo;vaccines&rdquo; that sent nearly $<a href=\"https:\/\/www.somo.nl\/big-pharma-raked-in-usd-90-billion-in-profits-with-covid-19-vaccines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">100 billion<\/a> in taxpayer-funded profits to Big Pharma&rsquo;s coffers. The snack industry meanwhile saw junk food sales jump $<a href=\"https:\/\/theshelbyreport.com\/2023\/01\/31\/how-has-the-pandemic-and-inflation-impacted-snack-sales\/#:~:text=Total%20snack%20unit%20sales%20were,off%20by%20just%201%20percent.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10 billion<\/a> over two years as the pharmaceutical industry promoted prescriptions to enable the lifestyles behind the very conditions that left people vulnerable to severe sickness in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy railing against &ldquo;Big Pharma&rdquo; in this week&rsquo;s Senate hearings as the face of a new movement to make America healthy again wasn&rsquo;t as much an effort to &ldquo;scapegoat&rdquo; the industry as it was a rallying cry to spur the health care system to offer true &ldquo;health care.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Tristan Justice is a national correspondent for The Federalist and the co-author of &#8220;Fat and Unhappy: How &#8216;Body Positivity&#8217; Is Killing Us (and How to Save Yourself).&#8221; He has also written for The Washington Examiner and The Daily Signal.
