Sullenberger III, or &ldquo;Sully&rdquo; as he&rsquo;s known, made comments reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/30\/us\/plane-crash-potomac-lessons-sully.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a> on Thursday about the difficulties pilots deal with at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/day-dc-crash-near-miss-reagan-national-airport-eerily-similar-details\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reagan National Airport<\/a>, how safe flying is despite this incident, and what can be learned from it.<\/p>\n<p>Sully successfully landed an Airbus A320 in the Hudson River in 2009 shortly after taking off from LaGuardia Airport in New York.<\/p>\n<p>The plane struck a flock of geese that took out both engines.<\/p>\n<p>The emergency landing was a success as there were zero fatalities out of the 150 passengers and five crew members.<\/p>\n<p> <script type=\"text\/javascript\"> \t\t\tif ( getCookie( \"ff_subbed\" ) ) { \t\t\t\tdocument.getElementById(\"stnvideo\").remove() \t\t\t} \t\t<\/script> <\/p>\n<p>Sully called flying &ldquo;exceptionally safe&rdquo; despite the events of Wednesday night. The Times stated there had not been a fatal commercial crash in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/federal-judge-orders-historic-ship-ss-united-states-leave-berth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the U.S.<\/a> in nearly 16 years.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve had to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">learn important lessons literally<\/a> with blood too often, and we had finally gotten beyond that, to where we could learn from incidents, and not accidents,&rdquo; Sully said.<\/p>\n<p>He then commented on the unique difficulties posed to pilots at Reagan Airport &mdash; as it was built nearly one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/buttigieg-claims-racism-is-physically-built-into-u-s-interstate-system\/\" title=\"Buttigieg Claims Racism Is \u2018Physically Built\u2019 Into U.S. Interstate System\">hundred years ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It hasn&rsquo;t changed much since then,&rdquo; he said, adding, &ldquo;Of course, we&rsquo;ve added technology to it. But a lot of the technology is old.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, whatever problems posed by the airport itself appear to be compounded by other conditions, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/day-dc-crash-near-miss-reagan-national-airport-eerily-similar-details\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">understaffing in the control tower<\/a>, nighttime conditions, and flying over the Potomac.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Nighttime always makes things different about seeing other aircraft &mdash; basically all you can do is see the lights on them,&rdquo; Sullenberger explained.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You have to try to figure out: Are they above you or below you? Or how far away?
