The second is that nobody &mdash;&nbsp;<em>nobody<\/em> &mdash; knows what caused the disaster in the first 24 hours. (Anyone old enough to remember how wrong we were about TWA Flight 800 being bombed or hit by a missile?)<\/p>\n<p>The collision between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/updates-horror-dc-black-hawk-helicopter-passenger-jet-collide-bodies-potomac-prayer-needed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Airlines Flight 5342<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/pete-hegseth-releases-tragic-news-black-hawk-discovered-upside-potomac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Army helicopter<\/a>, which claimed 67 lives, may have reached a new low in this department. As Dan McLaughlin pointed out at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/air-traffic-control-and-the-dei-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Review<\/a>, people are already blaming Trump administration Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy for the disaster just outside of Reagan National Airport near Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Duffy took office the morning before the collision, which more or less rules him out as a factor. Not that this stopped anybody on social media, of course:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">&ldquo;It is not standard to have aircraft collide.&rdquo;<br \/> &ndash; Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy<\/p>\n<p>Ya think?<\/p>\n<p>And yes &ndash; he really said this.<\/p>\n<p>This is what happens when Faux News talking heads are put in charge. Duffy and Hegseth both should be forced to resign.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and impeach trump.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Eric Slater (@ericsslater) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ericsslater\/status\/1884968193959035225?\">January 30, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p> <script type=\"text\/javascript\"> \t\t\tif ( getCookie( \"ff_subbed\" ) ) { \t\t\t\tdocument.getElementById(\"stnvideo\").remove() \t\t\t} \t\t<\/script> <\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>However, McLaughlin also noted &ldquo;that Trump has actually moved to <em>fix<\/em> a problem with how we hire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-carriers-cost-struggle-overshadows-travel-demand-surge\/\" title=\"U.S. carriers\u2019 cost struggle overshadows travel demand surge\">air-traffic controllers<\/a>, in order to reorient it toward hiring the best people in order to make air-traffic control safer.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The question raises itself: We&nbsp;<em>weren&rsquo;t<\/em> hiring air-traffic controllers, some of the most critical positions in civilian government employ, simply on the basis of merit?<\/p>\n<p>Fact check: Accurate, unfortunately.<\/p>\n<p>And not only that, we&rsquo;ve been doing that since Barack Obama&rsquo;s administration, allowing for those with intellectual, psychiatric, and physical disabilities to receive what we&rsquo;d now call DEI protections.<\/p>\n<p>Let&rsquo;s start from an <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130226035813\/https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/jobs\/diversity_inclusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">archived 2013 version<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/faa-finally-takes-action-new-jersey-drone-mystery-cites-special-security-reasons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Aviation Administration&rsquo;s<\/a> website and its &ldquo;diversity and inclusion&rdquo; page.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Diversity is integral to achieving FAA&rsquo;s mission of ensuring safe and efficient travel across our nation and beyond,&rdquo; the page read. &ldquo;Because diversity is so critical, FAA actively supports and engages in a variety of associations, programs, coalitions and initiatives to support and accommodate employees from diverse communities and backgrounds. Our people are our strength, and we take great care in investing in and valuing them as such.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Part of this included hiring those with &ldquo;targeted disabilities&rdquo;: &ldquo;Targeted disabilities are those disabilities that the Federal government, as a matter of policy, has identified for special emphasis in recruitment and hiring. They include hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/newsroom\/faa-provides-aviation-careers-people-disabilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019<\/a> &mdash; under the Trump administration, it must be said &mdash; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dei-run-amok-faa-hiring-people-severe-intellectual-psychiatric-disability-disaster-making\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAA<\/a> &ldquo;announced a pilot program to help prepare people with disabilities for careers in air traffic operations.&rdquo; Again, it emphasized that it was looking &ldquo;to identify specific opportunities for people with targeted disabilities, empower them and facilitate their entry into a more diverse and inclusive workforce.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20241211203347\/https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/pwdp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">archived page<\/a> from December 2024, the FAA touted &ldquo;&lsquo;On-the-spot&rsquo; special appointment authority&rdquo; to hire individuals via a &ldquo;non-competitive hiring method,&rdquo; one of which involved &ldquo;hiring people with severe physical disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, and intellectual disabilities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The initiative was last updated on March 23, 2022, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/faa-diversity-push-hire-workers-severe-intellectual-disabilities-sparks-concern-mockery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the Biden administration was already being sued because of discriminatory hiring practices for air-traffic controllers.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;From 1989 to 2013, the Collegiate Training Initiative program was a pipeline to a career in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/search-and-rescue-teams-at-site-of-indonesian-plane-crash\/\" title=\"Search and rescue teams at site of Indonesian plane crash\">air traffic control<\/a>. The program aimed to ensure future air traffic controllers had the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out the job,&rdquo; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2024\/may\/14\/dei-has-jeopardized-air-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Times<\/a> reported in May 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;More than ten years ago, the Obama Administration scrapped 1000 qualified candidates. The administration&rsquo;s justification was that the pool of applicants was not diverse enough, so they would be purged from consideration. Instead of hiring candidates with the most competency, individuals were elevated for hiring consideration based on their race.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Despite their intent to expand the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-has-short-sobering-quote-before-signing-executive-orders-in-wake-of-dc-air-collision\/\" title=\"Trump Has Short, Sobering Quote Before Signing Executive Orders in Wake of DC Air Collision\">air traffic control hiring pool<\/a> via DEI, the FAA has recently admitted they are woefully understaffed and that current air traffic controllers are severely overworked. One report found that only 3 of the 313 air traffic facilities around the nation met the FAA targets last year. This has forced the agency to admit safety could be jeopardized. To mitigate such danger, the agency has &lsquo;at times halted departures or otherwise slowed down air traffic.&rsquo;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Trump has reversed this hiring policy; a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/01\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-ends-dei-madness-and-restores-excellence-and-safety-within-the-federal-aviation-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fact sheet<\/a> from the White House said the administration planned &ldquo;to immediately stop Biden DEI hiring programs and return to non-discriminatory, merit-based hiring&rdquo; and would require &ldquo;the FAA Administrator to review the past performance and performance standards of all FAA employees in critical safety positions and make clear that any individual who fails to demonstrate adequate capability is replaced by someone who will ensure Americans&rsquo; flight safety and efficiency.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Now, let me reiterate what I said at the top: We have no idea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-all-flights-halted-at-ronald-reagan-national-airport-after-passenger-jet-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what caused this crash<\/a>, and we will not know the exact details for some time. Since Obama\u2019s administration, there has been an emphasis on diversity and inclusion (DEI) in hiring practices for these critical roles.<\/p>\n<p>An archived FAA webpage from 2013 stated: \u201cDiversity is integral to achieving FAA\u2019s mission of ensuring safe travel.\u201d It mentioned efforts to recruit individuals with &#8220;targeted disabilities,&#8221; which include various physical and intellectual challenges.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, under Trump\u2019s administration, the FAA launched a program aimed at preparing people with disabilities for careers in air traffic control while promoting diversity within its workforce.<\/p>\n<p>A December 2024 archived page from the FAA discussed special appointment authority allowing non-competitive hiring methods for individuals with severe disabilities\u2014a policy last updated in March 2022 according to Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, lawsuits against Biden&#8217;s administration regarding discriminatory hiring practices highlight issues dating back years when qualified candidates were dismissed due to lack of diversity rather than competency.<\/p>\n<p>Despite attempts at expanding DEI initiatives within air traffic control recruitment leading to staffing shortages and overworked controllers\u2014only three out of 313 facilities met performance targets last year\u2014the Trump administration has since reversed these policies favoring merit-based hiring instead.<\/p>\n<p>To reiterate my initial point: We currently lack clarity on what caused this crash; however, concerns regarding inadequate air traffic control oversight remain valid given such incidents&#8217; potential implications on safety.
