This was a dark and excruciating night in our nation&rsquo;s capitol and in our nation&rsquo;s history and a tragedy of terrible proportions,&rdquo; President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/cspan\/status\/1885002717858263358\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in a Thursday morning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bq4STq9LwCI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press conference<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1661376076\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance spoke to reporters this morning about the disastrous <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ronald-reagan-national-airport-crash-cebb142d24859ba0c4e0e4fd6c33773f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crash<\/a> last night between an American Airlines jet and an Army Blackhawk helicopter &mdash; killing 67 people total near the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You had a helicopter that had the ability to stop. &hellip; And the turn it made was not the correct turn, obviously, and it did somewhat the opposite of what it was told,&rdquo; Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bq4STq9LwCI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. &ldquo;You had a confluence of bad decisions that were made, and you have people that lost their lives &mdash; violently lost their lives.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Trump signed a presidential <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RapidResponse47\/status\/1885071140109881591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">memorandum<\/a> Thursday afternoon &ldquo;ordering an immediate assessment of aviation safety&rdquo; to undo &ldquo;the damage resulting from the Biden administration&rsquo;s obsession with DEI.&rdquo; In his morning press conference, Trump mentioned last week&rsquo;s executive order on &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/01\/keeping-americans-safe-in-aviation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Keeping Americans Safe In Aviation<\/a>&rdquo; by sweeping DEI from the Federal Aviation Administration. He explained the FAA had adopted lower standards in the name of &ldquo;diversity,&rdquo; putting Americans&rsquo; lives at risk.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have to have our smartest people. It doesn&rsquo;t matter what they look like, how they speak. &hellip; They have to be talented, naturally talented geniuses,&rdquo; Trump said. So we don&rsquo;t know, but &hellip; we&rsquo;re going to look into that and we&rsquo;re going to see.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Army launched a program called &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/standto\/archive\/2020\/06\/29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Project Inclusion<\/a>&rdquo; in 2020 and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/dei-military-pete-hegseth-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">required<\/a> its Green Berets to take DEI training, as The Free Press reported. According to The Heritage Foundation, cadets at the Air Force Academy have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/defense\/commentary\/dei-distracting-our-military-its-primary-task\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forced<\/a> through sessions on things like &ldquo;White privilege, internal bias and systemic racism.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the FAA has had a diversity push of its own. The agency&rsquo;s emphasis on &ldquo;diversity&rdquo; led the agency to recruit people with &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/faas-diversity-push-includes-focus-hiring-people-severe-intellectual-psychiatric-disabilities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">severe<\/a> intellectual&rdquo; and &ldquo;psychiatric&rdquo; disabilities, as Fox News reported in January of last year. Months later, a nonprofit sued the FAA for <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleflying.com\/faa-air-traffic-controller-applicants-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rejecting<\/a> more than 1,000 air traffic control applicants based on their race.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You have many hundreds of people suing the government because they would like to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-federal-investigators-reveal-likely-reason-for-helicopter-crash-that-killed-kobe-bryant\/\" title=\"BREAKING: Federal Investigators Reveal Likely Reason For Helicopter Crash That Killed Kobe Bryant\">air traffic controllers<\/a>, but they were turned away because of the color of their skin,&rdquo; Vance <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/breaking911\/status\/1885008886010134559?s=12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. &ldquo;That policy ends under Donald Trump&rsquo;s leadership, because safety is the first priority of our aviation industry.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Vance echoed Trump&rsquo;s points about the necessity of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">hiring qualified aviation employees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We want to hire the best people,&rdquo; Vance said. &ldquo;We want to make sure we have enough people at air traffic control who are actually competent to do the job.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Logan Washburn is a staff writer covering election integrity.
