The festival runs for six weeks and is expected to draw 400 million Hindus by the time it is finished, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india\/casualties-feared-stampede-breaks-out-indias-maha-kumbh-festival-hindu-reports-2025-01-29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters,<\/a> which noted that pilgrims seek to bathe in &ldquo;sacred river waters.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, one of the major days of the festival, crowds surged toward the confluence of rivers in which bathing is considered by Hindus to be an important act to increase a believer&rsquo;s chances of salvation after death.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;More bodies are coming in. We have nearly 40 bodies here. Hindus also believe the mythical and invisible Saraswati River can be accessed in the festival. About 100 million were present Wednesday when tragedy struck.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;People were going in every direction,&rdquo; witness Ayesha Mishra told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c3rwjnr12lwo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC<\/a>. &ldquo;They were getting pushed around and falling down.
