So, why are GOP lawmakers in so-called &ldquo;red states&rdquo; working overtime to deny their voters&rsquo; wishes?<\/p>\n<p>In Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis is having to fight members of his own party to push through <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/01\/15\/desantis-rolls-out-legislative-blueprint-to-fast-track-trumps-deportation-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legislation<\/a> that would assist the Trump administration&rsquo;s deportation operations. The governor&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\">proposal includes policies enhancing penalties<\/a> against illegal aliens, greater state cooperation with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/soros-backed-philadelphia-da-considered-helping-non-citizens-accused-of-rape-murder-avoid-deportation-records-show\/\" title=\"Soros-Backed Philadelphia DA Considered Helping Non-Citizens Accused Of Rape, Murder Avoid Deportation, Records Show\">federal immigration authorities<\/a>, election integrity safeguards, and more. <\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-207449835\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rather than heed DeSantis&rsquo; call for a special session to deliver on the agenda Floridians voted for, the legislature&rsquo;s GOP leadership took it upon themselves to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/desantis-slams-floridas-legislature-for-trying-to-sabotage-pro-trump-immigration-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gavel<\/a> into a separate special session on Monday to advance a seemingly <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1884047188931609006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">watered-down version<\/a> of the legislation the governor requested. DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1883944039432741070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> in a Monday tweet he is &ldquo;glad the Legislature&rsquo;s bill includes many of [his] proposals.&rdquo; But the governor argued that the bill put forward by Speaker Daniel Perez and Senate President Ben Albritton is &ldquo;substantially weaker than the proposals [he] outlined and that are necessary to ensure that Florida leads on fulfilling the Trump Administration&rsquo;s mandate to enforce immigration law and deport illegal aliens.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We need strong immigration legislation that ensures Florida is doing everything it can to assist this important federal mission,&rdquo; DeSantis wrote. &ldquo;The Legislature&rsquo;s bill is a bait-and-switch tactic trying to create the illusion of an illegal immigration crack down, when it does anything but. It is an insult to name such a weak bill after President Trump, who has been so strong on this issue.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>According to Perez, the bill would <a href=\"https:\/\/hotair.com\/tree-hugging-sister\/2025\/01\/27\/i-couldnt-begin-to-tell-you-what-the-fl-leglislature-thought-they-were-doing-today-n3799233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">designate<\/a> the Florida commissioner of Agriculture as the &ldquo;state&rsquo;s chief immigration officer.&rdquo; The position is currently held by Wilton Simpson, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandoweekly.com\/news\/new-florida-immigration-law-could-have-unintended-consequences-says-agriculture-commissioner-34780754\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> expressed concern that a 2023 state immigration bill including restrictions for employing foreign nationals could produce &ldquo;unintended consequences&rdquo; for businesses reliant on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/census-data-shows-trumps-immigration-win\/\" title=\"Census Data Shows Trump&#039;s Immigration Win\">illegal immigrant labor<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Simpson&rsquo;s &ldquo;business holdings include a sizable egg farm,&rdquo; according to Orlando Weekly.<\/p>\n<p>During his tenure as Senate president (2020-2022), Simpson notably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/elections\/florida-republicans-back-standoff-desantis-congressional-map-rcna23948\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fought<\/a> DeSantis over the governor&rsquo;s veto of a congressional map approved by the GOP-controlled legislature. Dustin Burrows as speaker. This was done despite a majority of the House GOP caucus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2024\/12\/07\/texas-house-speaker-david-cook-dustin-burrows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endorsing<\/a> Republican Rep. David Cook, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox7austin.com\/news\/dustin-burrows-speaker-house-what-it-means\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">enjoyed<\/a> support from Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Attorney General Ken Paxton.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox7austin.com\/news\/dustin-burrows-speaker-house-what-it-means\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> by local media, Burrows is an ally of former GOP Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/05\/24\/attorney-general-ken-paxton-calls-on-texas-house-speaker-to-resign-over-slurring-episode-stymying-election-integrity-bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dade Phelan<\/a>, who allowed Democrats to chair House committees and stymied numerous conservative legislative priorities. <\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/texasscorecard.com\/state\/speaker-burrows-confirms-house-rules-were-written-by-democrat-lawyer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Texas Scorecard<\/a>, the House rules spearheaded by Burrows and rushed through the lower chamber last week &ldquo;without debate or opportunities for amendments&rdquo; effectively &ldquo;mandate that all House committee vice-chairs be Democrats and expand their authority.&rdquo; A Democrat lawyer <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Toth_4_Texas\/status\/1884044809612189819\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> helped author the package, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Similar maneuvers empowering Democrat legislators were also reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ktvh.com\/news\/montana-senate-republican-caucus-still-split-after-rules-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Montana&rsquo;s<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/14gQS5eti9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South Carolina&rsquo;s<\/a> respective GOP-controlled legislatures.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Shawn Fleetwood is a staff writer for The Federalist and a graduate of the University of Mary Washington.
