Gas-operated semiautomatic handguns with a detachable magazine would also be prohibited under the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifying firearms already owned by Colorado residents would not be illegal, though they could not transfer or sell them.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats argue the legislation is necessary for safety.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;High-capacity magazines make shootings more lethal by increasing the amount of ammunition that can be fired before a shooter needs to pause to reload,&rdquo;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.senatedems.co\/newsroom\/colorado-senate-democrats-unveil-first-ten-bills-of-2025-legislative-session\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Senate Democrats said<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Many pro-firearm advocacy groups have already come out against the legislation, urging Coloradans to share their concerns during the committee meeting.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We need all freedom-loving Coloradans to show in full force next Tuesday and oppose this egregious violation of our rights,&rdquo;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RMGOColorado\/status\/1882961840667529712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>said Rocky Mountain Gun Owners<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/everytownresearch.org\/rankings\/state\/colorado\/#:~:text=In%20the%20years%20since%20the%20movie%20theater%20shooting%2C%20Colorado%20has,a%20gun%20dealer%20licensing%20system.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Considered<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;one of the top states in the nation for &ldquo;gun law strength,&rdquo; in the last five years, Colorado has enacted over 30 different gun laws.<\/p>\n<p>Yet,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/everytownresearch.org\/rankings\/state\/colorado\/#:~:text=In%20the%20years%20since%20the%20movie%20theater%20shooting%2C%20Colorado%20has,a%20gun%20dealer%20licensing%20system.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>according to Everytown for Gun Safety<\/strong><\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mothers-against-murderers-push-gun-control-in-florida\/\" title=\"&#039;Mothers Against Murderers&#039; Push Gun Control in Florida\">gun violence prevention group<\/a>, gun violence in the state remains higher than the national average.
